+12 Internets | Subjectively speaking of course, Peavey nailed their tones in the early 90s, then shit all over them with the exception of the 5150/6505. Everything since then, especially their combos, just sound like they hired an engineer and said "Hey, give us your best Recto impersonation" and failed miserably. If you want a SS Peavey, get yourself an old (teal stripe, non-chrome knobbed) Stereo Chorus or do what I did and grab a Supreme 160 head and pair it with a Recto 4x12. Fucking hell, it's an absolute monster: (Note: this isn't a pic of my head, I don't play Crate stuff) ![]() I picked up a pair of them, one for recording and one to leave at my drummer's house (my main rig is a bigass rack of shit that's a giant pain in the ass to move). The thing abso-fucking-lutely ROARS, and it's got that late 80's ultra-compressed speed/thrash metal vibe to it, with gobs of bottom end so you can do your best Lamb of God impression as well. I paid under $200 for them both since nobody gives a shit about them anymore but they're still a bit of a bitch to find in good shape. I can drown my drummer out with it in a small studio space and I can't say enough about just how much the dirty channels scream on this thing. If you're going tube, Mesa for metal if you have the cash, or get close to it with something like a Tech21 or a Fender and a stack of pedals. The Peavey shit (I guess the JSX is exempt here as well, but again it costs a fortune) just doesn't sound good to me at all. Again I play shred/power metal and listen to death metal and Dokken, so take my opinion for what it's worth. I also very much prefer solid state amps to tube because unless you're running a hot plate in front of it, you have to run your tube amp wide open to really get the most out of it, whereas a SS amp's tone is all there if you have the volume at 2 or 10. There are just a lot of better amps out there for the cash, and at $500, you're only a couple hundred away from a used Recto combo or something like a Nomad if you play your Craigslist cards right.

| Have you played the Vypyr before? I'm not saying you're wrong. You know a lot more about gear and music than I do. I'm just saying that it sounded great when I played one. It models all of their amps, (6505 and JSX) as well as all of the other popular boutique amps. It also has like 11 popular stomp boxes. I don't have a lot of experience with this gear as I haven't been playing that long, but everything I've read says it's about as close as you can get. I prefer solid state as well. I play mostly death metal and SS seems to cater to that. Not to say you don't know what you're talking about, but every time somebody tells me that an amp I like is shit it is always followed with "back in XX decade they made the real amps, these new amps are shit." Like you said, it's all subjective. Though, I really do value your opinion as an obviously accomplished guitar player. My friends play WOW and I say it's bullshit, because UO was the real man's MMO. ![]() |

The Vypyr doesn't necessarily suck - bad choice of words and an off the cuff post on my part - my apologies. I don't like it, but sucks was definitely the wrong word. I didn't mean to come off as a dick there. I know guys who swear up and down that x_piece_of_boutique_gear is the greatest amp ever because it costs $5000 and gets even better if you play a $5000 guitar through it, and I always roll my eyes when they go off on tangents like that. Tone is tone, and what sounds good to you will sound good if you've been playing for 5 months or 20 years. Again always read any of my opinions with the knowledge that I'm an old 80's shredder whose main source of tone is a GSP2101 that I've had for about 15 years now. I do love the shit out of those old Peavey's though, and it's completely possible that I just don't like modelers because I'm getting old, heh.

| I find it hilarious you found the need to point that out because I would, too. I'm in the other boat on solid state vs. tube. I am a full tube amp supporter all the way. Granted, back when all I used to play was metal/hard rock I really dug playing through a GNX3 but as I've matured as a player my tastes for what I want have, too. I'm a gain at 9:00 kind of guy so I kind of rely on playing off the amp almost as much as my pedals. I feel you can't get that kind of relationship with solid state amps. NOTE: I don't use a $5000 boutique amp. I use a less than $1000 Fender Hot Rod 2x12. My pedal board is where my investments lie.

+12 Internets | Some eye candy - my buddy is a huge Stryper and EVH fan, so he had this one-off made up from a custom body and a UV7PWH neck. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The neck was actually an older style square non-AANJ heel that he had to rework himself to fit the AANJ joint, which is part of the reason why it's dyed black. Looks fucking awesome either way.

| I have a Vetta and one of the first Variax's. It has been a great set up for me for several years but I have to admit that I am more interested in versatility than purity of tone. I tend to record direct anyways. I can record both the modeled and the clean tone coming out of the Vetta, so if I don't like what I am hearing in the mix I can send the clean tone back through the amp and dial it in, or even run it through an amp sim on the computer. These days I am lusting after a Gibson Darkfire. I'm still hearing about too many problems with them to actually pull the trigger though. |
