| I couldn't disagree more. I've heard this before, but I don't think people follow Pearl Jam enough. No Code is a fantastic album top to bottom. I love Yield, Binaural, and Riot Act. They are really good albums. Vitalogy had some amazing songs, but overall I didn't care for the album. I haven't really listened to their last album enough. Take a look at the hits they've released since VS; Corduroy, Better Man, Hail Hail, Who You Are, Given To Fly, Do The Evolution, Light Years, Of The Girl, Love Boat Captain, etc. That list isn't included the numerous B-Side hits. They have consistently released new music and toured. They are one of the best live shows I've ever seen. To say they haven't released anything decent since VS couldn't be further from the truth.

+4 Internets | Here's my take on that above post. Alot of the early Pearl Jam fans have trouble reconciling with the fact that they arent the same band they were when they started. Im one of them, Ill admit it. I listen to Yield or Riot Act and I dont think they are bad albums, but they aren't the Pearl Jam I knew and loved and cut my teeth on so to speak. The songs you mention arent terrible songs, but I did alot of growing up to Ten and Vs., they were the soundtracks for too many events in my life to count and to hear those early raw, intense, and personal songs then hear Ed singing about a Love Boat Captain on a newer disc, it just isn't the same. I dont think that anything since Vitalogy has had the same emotional oomph behind it as the early stuff and to someone like me, and apparently Pharazon also, that's what makes the difference. |

"Haven't released anything decent" is what triggered my response. I wasn't trying to knock peoples musical tastes, that's not how it works. I think the band is perfectly capable of releasing an album as good as if not better than Ten or VS, which in my opinion are their 2 best.

+3 Internets | I think the downfall of Pearl Jam was when they signed with whoever it was that wanted them to produce an album a year for 5 years so they just put together songs fast to put out albums and they really werent that great. They had some decent songs, but no where near Ten and Rearview Mirror. I remember buying the Ten album and then the Ten Export version for $30 that just had three extra tracks, two of which were Dirty Frank and Yellow Ledbetter.

+4 Internets | Yea, Pearl Jam refused to make music videos after the Ten album to stop the MTV b.s.. Then later stood up for its fans by standing up to the giant Ticketmaster when they wanted to gouge fans for tickets by adding "service fees". Most of their albums have been experimental rock in the late 90s + post 2000s along with a whole slew of Activism. Calling the band a sell out is a pretty retarded statement.

+16 Internets | Not even close to selling out by any definition. I think the above posters Eomer and Yukiri hit the nail on the head, their music has simply evolved over the years. What band doesn't change over a 15+ year period? My friend is a die-hard Zeppelin fan, he worships the early albums, but absolutely refuses to listen to In Through The Out Door (Hot Dog) and Coda. I'm not comparing them to Zeppelin directly, just giving another example of a legendary band whose sound evolved over a decade. Back on topic, the best part of the set is the DVD release (finally) of the MTV Unplugged sessions. Although they left out Rockin' In The Free World, the quality is amazing and light years ahead of the crappy VHS copies circulating the net for the last decade. | Flaccid Steel | Uh... so many bands sell out. They start off with a original sound but a couple albums later, evolves into the mainstream shit that every other band does. One that stood out to me recently is Papa Roach. How can you go from Cut My Life Into Pieces to Lifeline? I don't listen to them but the latter sounds like every other fucking generic band. Can't even tell the difference. |
