Can't narrow it down to one hehe, at least not personally.

Adrian Smith - yeah he's hyped, but there's a damned good reason.

Gus G. - Never heard of this guy till I stumbled across a band called Firewind. The sheer intensity of his playing on Firewind's Between Heaven and Hell was just satisfying to hear.

not saying he is the best, or one of my favorites. but have you ever heard of charlie hunter?
he plays a wierd instrument, top 3 strings of a bass and the bottom 5 strings of a guitar. i saw him live a long time ago and was hypnotized by his ability to play the thing. i bought his studio CD and personally i thought it sucked. the magic was lost when i was no longer watching him play it.

I'm not a music buff, but I find Dire Strait's guitarist to be quite skilled. I don't know how influential or whatever he is, or even his names, but I definately can appreciate his music.

The dude from Dire Straits name is Mark Knopfler.

To me, one of the most interesting guitar players is Stanley Jordan. Typically, I am not a fan of the jazz genre, but this guy's playing style is so bizarre it warrants a listen. The guys primary method of playing is 2 handed tapping, so when he plays, it sounds like he is playing rhythm, bass, and lead all at the same time (he has his guitar tuned to pentatonics to achieve this effect). Anyways, download his version of "Eleanor Rigby", (not sure if I spelled that right) it is interesting to say the least....

Whoever mentioned Victor Wooten on bass is a pretty smart guy, but he's a terrible songwriter IMO. I'll have to give best bass player honors to Jaco Pastorius.

As for guitar, it's got to be Billy Corgan, he's absolutely ridiculous and has some of the best soloing ever to be.

Drummers, well, you're going to hear Danny Carey a lot on the net, but another Pumpkins guy, Jimmy Chamberlain, takes the cake here.

Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana, and Phil Keaggy are my favorites in no particular order.

Phil Keaggy is probably not known by many cuz he mostly does (shudder) Christian Rock, but listen to some his Instrumental stuff some time, I recommend Beyond Nature and (My Favorite) Master and the Musician. It's not nessisarily new or cutting edge, but he can make that guitar sound with feeling, and I still get shivers up my spine from time to time.

yup here is the final choice for all of you I have summed it up.

TOM MORELLO above ALL. his skill/sweed/whatever is the best.

For drums, yup you guessed it, Danny Carey. You listen to this guy or go watch him play live and you will walk away with a pitched tent in your pants and a smile on your face.

You put tom, danny and maynard (Tools lead singer for you morons) together and i havent quite got a bass player thought up yet but so far that would own your ass 100x over

I think they do have a few songs together but not real sure... i know they are all friends and helped each other get big...

Also, Zack De'la Rocha's lyrics in rage against the machine are f'n beautiful. Im not even of the spanish accent nor did my ancestors take a warm cock to the ass from the US government during their younger days and I still feel as if I am from Zacks decent and got constantly shit on by the "Beautiful" "Helpfull" U.S. Government. The man is a god

Jerry Garcia was mindbogglingly talanted. However, since he doesn't get radio airplay of long solos....people will ignore him. There's reasons other than being able to buy acid that the Dead sold out nearly every concert every year for 30 years.

Just some quick counterpoints while I'm here.

Clapton, Vaighn, Page, etc etc. < Robert Johnson. The man was a genius. I didn't reaqad every post so someone may have brought him up allready, but I think if you went and asked Clapton he'd tell you he's not half the musician Johnson was.

Satriani, Hendrix, Van Halen, Jeff Beck, Yengvie Malmstein (I am a viking!) etc etc... technical proficency isn't talent. The sad fact of the music industry is that there's probably 500 people more talanted than those that are sucessfull that most of us will never hear.

If I had to pick one person who had the most impact, had the talent and the technique and the soul it'd be Muddy Waters.
