I think you have to break this down into 3 categories: Rhythm, Lead, and both.

Rhythm:

Dave Matthews
Lennon
James Hetfield
Stone Gossard
Billy Gorgan
Paul Simon

Lead:

George Harrison (Beatle Period)
David Gilmour (He can be put in both as well)
Mike McGready
There are a lot

Both:

GILMOUR
Hendrix
Page
Santana
Tom Morello
Trey Anastasio
Clapton

Dunno, this is such a hard question to answer definitively. Depends a lot on if you're asking about playstyles, speed, technique, influence, etc.

I'll throw Carlos Santana out there since no one has mentioned him yet.

although I love classic rock, I never really got into the beatles. call me crazy, but they just never did much for me. I recognize and respect the fact that they are extremely talented and important figures in modern music, but that doesnt mean I have to like it very much.

Finally.. a worth topic of discussion..

It's very difficult to choose who is the best at an art form since opinions vary so widely..

Guitars that changed the world:

Hendrix
Iommi
Rhodes
Van Halen
Malmsteen
SRV

Hendrix brought new sounds never heard before and technicality nobody dreamed of.. Hendrix is probably the single most influencial musician ever.

Personal faves:

John Petrucci
Kenny Wayne Shepherd
Eric Johnson
Buckethead
Tom Morello
Dimebag

Yeah Fungul, this is a great list, I'd like to add James Taylor. though he isn't technically a guitar wizard, his music and playing style is instantly recognizable as his alone. This is something that I personally think is the mark of a true master.

Yes he did.. and I can't for the life of me understand why. It must have been a HUGE check. Doesn't take away from his scary musical abilities though.

John Frusciante

Amazing work. What have we learned from all these amazing guitarists? Thx Drugs.

I like Chet Atkins. Something about the style, kinda just relaxes ya.

I guess we're talking about metal/rock here... but well...

All the guitarists mentioned previously are/were amazing. I can't really pick a single favorite, but given the nature of the thread, I feel obligated to mention Robert Johnson.

I gotta agree with Hikaru.

John Petrucci is my favorite, the skill factor he employs in his music is unbelievable. And he plays any other guitarist's stuff with ease. Seeing him and Satch in concert live was unbelievable.
