Hardcore IS a genre of music, and it is defined by the scene that has been supporting it since the early days of NYHC with bands like Bad Brains and Agnostic Front. Best definition I ever heard of the style of music that is usually called hardcore was by the singer of Integrity, Dwid - "Hardcore is too punk to be metal and too metal to be punk" Any band that claims to be hardcore and didnt come up through the hardcore scene will get ripped on by the members of that scene. Hatebreed did come up through the hardcore scene and are thus a "hardcore" band. Slipknot did not and are metal. ps, I loved Overcast. Begging for Indifference was the first release of theirs I picked up (besides some comp stuff, like the Over the Edge comp and some boston hardcore comp 7") and I still give it heavy play.

Hearing of Earth Crisis reminded me of an old friend I had that was way into them and the whole straight edge thing. He told me a couple of pretty good straight edge jokes... How many straight edgers does it take to finish off a six pack? One...when his friends aren't around. How many straight edgers does it take to change a light bulb? None. Straight edgers can't change anything. Last edited by Bledynn : 01-28-2003 at 11:08 AM.

Sorry for the bump, I just wanted to add my 2 cents. Slipknot... only heard their first album, and I felt it was semi-decent at the time. I've "outgrown" that type of music since, at the time I listened to Korn, Fear Factory and Machine head that type of thing, and the only band of the three that still has its place on my MP3 list is FF. Demanufacture was great, Obsolete was better, and Digimortal is one notch below Obsolete, but still very good. Hell I even based a Doom mod on Obsolete. But then I found EQ and the project died... (http://www.doomworld.com/securitron .. notice the date of the last update... about the same time my first EQ char was created :P) I've stayed away from buying Kerrang / Metal Hammer magazines for a few years now, but this thread made me want to look into the newer bands again. Opeth sounds interesting. these days it's Emperor, Nine Inch Nails on my play list... none of that silly Slipknot stuff.
