Speaking as a person who hates music without instrumental talent, I can actually dig some rap. I consider Tupac more of a poet/musician than a "rapper".

Should be called CTV for Capitolism Televison. Bunch of shit music (95% of it) with tools trying to sell shit. Thats just IMO by the way.

MTV is awful, I stopped watching it a while ago because of the nearly 100% shit that gets put on there.

Jay Z is alright, the stuff off Reasonable Doubt and the shit he did with Biggy is fly.

I prefer Nas, however, despite the fact that Superugly and Takeover own Ether. Illmatic will go down as one of the greatest albums ever to be released for rap and Stillmatic wasn't that bad either.

Now I have to forget about the middle two ("Thats a one hot album every ten years average")

Well, Jay-z should work on his math skills...

Nas albums

1 - Illmatic
2 - It was Written
3 - I am...
4 - Nastradamus
5 - Stillmatic
6 - The Lost Tapes

Not to mention his other projects like The Firm and QB's Finest. I am pretty sure thats more than one hot album in 10 years.

Then again there is Jay-z, who puts out at least one CD a year. On that CD there is guaranteed to be one popular song, another decent hit, and then a bunch of unorigional crap. None of his CD's (I own them all) can compete song for song with Nas's 3rd best CD. Maybe there is something to be said for not rushing product out.

You really have to remember that every artist that lives from his or her art is working within an economic system. N'Sync and Detroit techno artists from Underground Resistance alike are doing records and performances that they sell. Their markets are just different in scope and in structure.

The interest is the art they produce and how it interacts with its scope and structure. A collective effort like N'Sync can also be very interesting and fascinating since the work is done within the pretty rigid boundaries of pop culture. Underground Resistance in that aspect has a lot more freedom and it's very interesting and fascinating to see how they use it.

I'll probably go even as far as saying that the creative motivations, be it the most noble feelings or pure greed, have no effect on the quality of the final product.

To answer the topic's question though, I have this thing for Flipmode Squad and Busta. I enjoy the diversity in voice textures and flow of the squad and Busta manages to always be very creative and to often Zig when you think he will Zag. Now if they write good lyrics when it comes to their scansion they have work to do on their meanings :P

EDIT: adding an off topic link that is still a bit on topic http://www.ucomics.com/boondocks/2002/11/12/ hehe

I would take Reasonable Doubt over any of Nas' releases except for Illmatic.

I believe that Jayz's point was that in Nas' career, the only album that was really "hot" (commercially and artistically) was Illmatic. While his others are good, their value decreases because we saw what Nas could do when he put Illmatic out, and none of his others approach it.

Still, I must agree that Nas is a better rapper than Jay-z, the song "Rewind" is plain amazing. It is like Memento but the song version.

However, I stand by the statement that Ether is not as good a dis as Superugly or Takeover.

I bought Jay-z's Blueprint 2 CD yesterday (go go origional titles!!!) and so far, I am pretty disappointed. Listed to the first CD 2 times and think there are 2 songs I actually like so far. I haven't listed to CD 2 yet but I hope there is something fresh on it /sigh

Just tired of Jay-z rapping about how the ROC is #1 and what kind of bling bling he has. Shit gets old, come up with new material please kkthx....

And in reality, Jay-z and Nas CD releases have been similar in that there first one has been there best, and neither have lived back up to the origional album. Jay-z just seems to try (and fail) more often... pot meet kettle.

Neither of them are great dis artist, LL Cool J does better dis records than these 2.

Have you ever noticed how long the commercial breaks last on MTV? They have to be at least twice as long as most channels' commercial breaks.

Jadaki you had me going until you mentioned LL Cool J, I can't stand him.

I was listening to Illmatic yesterday and I believe that it rivals Life After Death for the best ever rap album.

As for Jayz, the Blueprint was a fun, if mainstream, album. But just because something is directed towards the mainstream doesn't make it bad.
