toadies - and other bands that had a chance but failed

so many great songs off rubberneck.... then failed on the following cd. this was a local band for me so heard a lot of it... then they went big, and they are still great to this day, with memorable songs as backslider, tyler, possum kingdom, and i come from the water. their failure seemed to be the band did well but lost all its momentum when creating a follow up album(delayed roughly 3yrs). the follow up album was alright, and was similiar style, but truely missed the time for it to be in its prime. all around... a great band that had potential, but fell short

anyone else have any thoughts on other bands with similiar fates?

edit:
i sound like a retard. god damn.

Yeah, Possum Kingdom had several good songs on it. I still pop it into the player every now and again.

Tyler, I'm convinced, is one of the greatest songs ever written and recorded.

You'll all laugh but...

Jimmie's Chicken Shack.

Seriously.

They had one radio song a while back called "High". It was simple, catchy, and appealed to the pot-heads in the audience but generally wasn't a very good song.

However...

A weak moment at Streetside one day had me buy the album this song was on called "Pushing the Salmonilla Envelope".

This is one of the best and most overlooked albums of it's time (mid 90's). I'm not kidding. The song "High" is easily, far and away, the worst song on the album and is really nothing like the rest of it. In contrast to the stupid name of the band and the stupid radio song they had, the lyrics are some of the most intelligent and insightful I've heard. In fact one of my favorite quotes comes from the last track (forget the name atm) that I've never heard anywhere else: "Experience gives you options, a range of personalities...endless."

Also, lyrically, the song "Another Day" isn't super-great, but the music is. That song remains one of my all time favs still today.

Those guys deserved fame and fortune but alas, they had to fuck it all up and write the song "High" which basically discredited them in the eyes of most people.
