+2 Internets | I don't think they're underrated, but I think more people need to have their minds blown listening to The Stooges. Funhouse has got to be at the top of the list of Rock 'n Roll's greatest Artifacts.

| Anyone who likes noisy, dark indie rock should own Scratch Acid's The Greatest Gift. I don't toss around "best" or "greatest" much but this CD, compiling 3 albums is it, hands down. K. Cobain was documented saying that all he was trying to do with nirvana was cross the pixies, err, excuse me "pixies" with scratch acid. I personally think, interestingly enough it is in this thread, Suicide's self titled debut is the most important record (how pretentious is that?) made. Ushering in electronic music without focusing on the HEY IM DOING FANCY COMPUTER STUFF like others using synths in the 70s, just epic. Not for everyone, but if you think A.R.E. Weapons are special, take a look at Suicide. Jonathan Fire Eater's wolf songs for lambs is amazing. Everything the walkmen, the jesus lizard does and did is amazing. earlier blonde redhead. pre-hippie sonic youth is essential ;P U.S. Maple wins as well. Nobody was able to categorize them (The lead singer has a cameo in High Fidelity asking if they had any Captain Beefheart, because that was the only thing anyone could come up with). For synthy twee-ish pop, Komeda is a big unknown when their songs are perfect in a Stereolab sense. Stereolab tests the patience and envelope on droning noise but it always pays off. Random Transient Noise Bursts has epic songs on it. Tar did what they did really well: dissonant grinding rock. These listings are really "this shit should replace the shlock on the radio" for me, because of course if you're in any 30-35 y/o music snob circle this stuff is all a given. ps > I laughed when someone claimed Aerosmith was underrated... that's like saying the clash are underrated... who's fault is it that they cater to the muscle car + stripper pole in the trailer scene? There was a time when they were fucking ubiquitous on MTV with crazy, cryin, lyin tryin amazin bullshit where it was the same fucking song with inverted chord patterns. Remember America's love affair with Alicia Silverstone and Liv Tyler? Yea, me neither. |

| Six mana? Fuck that. If Ben Kweller was a band, it would be him, because Sha Sha is the best album of the last ten years. Beta Band is also pretty sweet, but I don't really know where a lot of bands are rated these days (I am completely divorced from the music press, and most of my friends have incredibly lame taste (and the others are of the I'm-too-cool set who stop liking a band the second anybody else has ever heard of it)) so it's really hard to say. Right now I love Lucinda Black Bear and I don't think they're very popular, but that probably leaves them more small-time than underrated. |

| Heathen. They only put out two (fantastic albums), but they earnt a place next to Metallica's awesome thrash run in terms of great thrash metal. Victims of Deception I rate even more highly than ... And Justice for All. Normally, I wouldn't gush so much about a band that had such a small discography, but fuck me, they were amazing. Even better, they've released their entire discography for free on the internet. The Official HEATHEN Website I recommend everyone with a passing liking for metal download (from Victims of Deception, not Recovered, the recording quality is better) "Opiate of the Masses", "Heathen's Song", "Fear of the Unknown", "Hypnotised", "Prisoners of Fate" and "Guitarmony". Some of the most awesome riffing I've ever heard with some great solos. Progressive thrash indeed. |
