Im going to have to say Bad Religion is the most underated band I've ever heard. Their lyrics are simply genious, some of the most unique and innovative stuff out there. The lead singer, Greg Graffin, is a Ph.D Student at Cornel University, and is studying evolutionary biology. This allows for a great view on religion, and society.

Even though they have been around for over twenty years now, and still representing everything that is punk rock, they are hardly known at all to the majority of people.

The Tea Party.

Unbelieveably talented band that can't even get an American label to distribute their albums anymore. I gotta make a boarder run to Windsor everytime they put out a new disc.

Most underated ever? Hard to decide, but for current day bands I'll pick Queens of the Stone Age.

They are definately the future of rock. Clearly evolving through their past 3 albums Josh Homme knows what hes doing. He's been writing the kinds of songs on their latest album, Songs for the Deaf, since the bands first formation. But he doesn't skip any steps, firmly beliving in the progression to get people initiated into his rock revolution. Paired with bassist Nick Oliveri, the songs come before all else, including who is currently considered a band member. Rotating in an ever changing line up depending on what is needed for the sound gives them a diversity that is admirable, while retaining their 2 primary song writers (Josh and Nick) gives them a clear direction to it. Brilliantly hooky, both in lyrics and riffs, its easy to groove along with when you first hear it. It doesn't end there though, listen to the album(s) a couple more times through and it will sound even better. Up there with Tenacious D as one of the bands that is hard to get sick of, it just grows on you more and more, the more you listen to it. The lyrics themselves leave a little to be desired, but as said earlier, its not what they say that is important in Queens of the Stone Age, but how they sound in context with the song. And the Queens do a great job of getting them to sound right, Josh Homme's voice shines on tracks such as "You Can't Quit Me Baby", "If Only", and "The Long Lost Art of Keeping a Secret". Screaming Trees Mark Lanegan's exceptional vocals can be found on "In the Fade" and "Hangin' Tree" while Nick Oliveri's infectious duality of mellow singing/screaming anger can be heard in "Auto Pilot"/"Quick and to the Pointless", and "Another Love Song"/"Six Shooter".

Despite how much their fans like them (and also, how good their albums actually are), they rarely, if ever, get a very favorable review by the critics. That, paired with the fact that they are still virtually unknown by the public by and large (though that has been changing a bit since the success of their latest single "No One Knows") earns them my vote for most underated current day band.

Mike Patton

Any band with Mike Patton in it. Has to be the most diverse artists ever, and only has a cult-like following.

Faith No More - I couldn't name one bad song Faith No More ever made.

Lovage - Mike Patton & Jennifer Charles for Vocals, Dan "The Automator" producing and laying down the tracks, and Kid Koala on Turntables. Lounge Music of the 21st Century Basically.

Tomahawk - Having Band Members of Melvins, Jesus Lizard, and Faith No More, how can you go wrong?

Fantomas - Damn. Mostly Experimental, Fantomas has ex-Slayer memeber Dave Lombardo, Buzz Osbourne of the Melvins, Trevor Dunn of Mr. Bungle, and Mike Patton. Listen to it with an open mind.

Mr. Bungle - Not for the weak of heart, Basically Funk, Jazz, Death Metal ,Pop ,Crazy Shit , Lounge Music, mixed together in a clusterfuck of goodness.

And Check out his new band coming out "Peeping Tom".

I hope Queens Of The Stone Age aren't the future of rock. They started out a pretty good metal parody, but they believed their own hype, and now they're just another nu-metal outfit, the only thing deliniating them from Korn or the Deftones their reliance on recycled Alice In Chains material.

I'm hoping The Walkmen are the future of rock, personally. Distorted drums, organ driven melody, guitars that owe their sound to Television, My Bloody Valentine and Joy Division, an urgency and immediacy unheard since U2's War and lyrics that would fit in well with The Velvet Underground's darker tales of city life.

If not The Walkmen, I hold out hope The Microphones could be the future. The style isn't for everyone, but Phil Elvrum's studio magic, the way the songs twist and morph and evolve throughout their runtime, the indescribable sounds and the sheer unpredictability of each track is something every band should aspire too.

Journey gets no respect. Aside from that, Dead Kennedys don't get mentioned enough and theyre cool even though Jello is a sellout.

Bah, QotSA aren't metal, they are just plain rock.. or if you want to genre-lize, stoner rock would be a more specific catagory. They sound nothing like Korn or the Deftones stylistically.

As for the Alice in Chains comment, ouch, I'll call "low blow" on that one. Just make sure to hit your mark if you go that route. Being a big fan of both AiC and QotSA I can tell you they have almost nothing in common. Riff-wise, there is no comparison. Rhythm wise (bass and drum parts) there is no comparison. Lyric-wise there is no comparison. The only thing I think you might be refering to is Homme's liberal use of "ahhh"s, "oooo"s, and "ohhh"s throughout a lot of QotSA songs. All I can say is that singing generic vowel sounds for harmony did not originate with AiC. In fact it was probably the first kind of music made by early humans.

However, I do quite agree with you on The Walkmen. Their less polished style is wonderfully refreshing after listening to so much "perfectionized-for-cd" music that I do. Not strong enough bass lines in most of the songs for my usual taste (though there are notable exceptions: "That's the Punch Line" etc), it seems like they were added in as an afterthought to a bunch of songs. Being a bass player, I probably weight that more than it should be though =).

You'll all laugh but...

Copied and pasted from my reply to the Toadies thred...

Jimmie's Chicken Shack.

Seriously.

They had one radio song a while back called "High". It was simple, catchy, and appealed to the pot-heads in the audience but generally wasn't a very good song.

However...

A weak moment at Streetside one day had me buy the album this song was on called "Pushing the Salmonilla Envelope".

This is one of the best and most overlooked albums of it's time (mid 90's). I'm not kidding. The song "High" is easily, far and away, the worst song on the album and is really nothing like the rest of it. In contrast to the stupid name of the band and the stupid radio song they had, the lyrics are some of the most intelligent and insightful I've heard. In fact one of my favorite quotes comes from the last track (forget the name atm) that I've never heard anywhere else: "Experience gives you options, a range of personalities...endless."

Also, lyrically, the song "Another Day" isn't super-great, but the music is. That song remains one of my all time favs still today.

Those guys deserved fame and fortune but alas, they had to fuck it all up and write the song "High" which basically discredited them in the eyes of most people.

One of the most underrated bands I can think of is Portishead. They're from Bristol England, which seems to be this breeding ground for amazing musicians (Massive Attack, Tricky, Smith & Mighty just to name a few).

Dummy may be the most underrated album of the 90s; it was insanely influencial in the European music scene (America is too concerned with pop and shit-rock to recognize good music). It's unbelivably sad that so few people know about this band.

im *really* going to support senor cleric in saying Suicide. They were hated when they first came out, or rather no one seemed to 'get it,' but thats oftentimes a mark of prescience, especially in this case.

Other choice: Dire Straits. God DAMN Mark Knopfler can play, easily one of the best guitarists ever in terms of understanding the uses of his instrument and the craft of music around it.

Going to have to agree with striker ace on this one, Faith No More by far wins this award, and Mr. bungle is just pure genious. If anyone doesn't believe us just check out Faith No More's greatest hits album, all of the songs are great on it.
