| Sxsw Anyone going to South by Southwest this year? For those of you that have never been are really missing out. Basically it's a 5 day music expo in Austin with a ton of relatively undiscovered bands searching for labels. I listen to a wide range of music from indie stuff to harcore and this festival has it all. Here is a link with this years lineup so far http://www.sxsw.com/music/festival/ . Wristbands are usually $60 dollars which will get you into 90% of the venues. How it works is A&R people with badges get in first, wristband wearers second and people paying at the door third (if there is room in the venue). |

| Yeah, a lot of the bands are signed already, it's actually more of an a&r expo so labels can see what is out there. Regardless, it's a fun ass time and if you do some research, a lot of the venues do stuff during the day like give out free beer and free b.b.q. to people with wristbands. It's really like spring break for anybody who really enjoys music. I'm really looking forward to seeing Mastodon again, they are soooooo good live. p.s. btw somecleric (i think that's who i was talking to about them)the fire theft just joined the bill and have a new mp3 up on their site. death cab for cutie is playing too . | I have been to the last 4 SxSW's and I plan on going to this one when I move back down to Austin in March. Also for people who are short on cash there are places you can get into without wristbands, just pick up a Chronicle and find out where the free shows are. |

| Last year Noise Pop (the late Feb/early March music festival) and SXSW were really, really good. The New Pornographers (with Ray Davies at SXSW), Neko Case, Nick Cave, Modest Mouse, The Shins, Azure Ray, Dismemberment Plan, Guided By Voices, Spoon, Pretty Girls Make Graves, Xiu Xiu, Clinic, The Natural History, The French Kicks, The Walkmen, Ash and The Weakerthans were all at one or both. Canada's equivalent, New Music West, which happened two months later in May, was really good too. It had The Constantines, Super Furry Animals, The Dirtmitts, Hinterland, Hot Hot Heat, The Weakerthans, Puffy Ami Yumi, Moneen, The Organ, Vue, Honeysuckle Serontina, Peppersands, Radio Berlin, Jordy Birch, The Gay, The Gossip, Panurge, Young & Sexy, Bif Naked, Liveonrelease and the highlight of the festival, Matt Good's first two performances with his new band. This year though, SXSW and Noise Pop both look crap. SXSW has always suffered from a signal to noise ratio problem, there's so much horrible crap, it's difficult to find the good. I didn't realize how incredible The Natural History, The Walkmen and The French Kicks were until after SXSW last year, so I skipped them, afterall, who'd heard of their label, *Time? I missed Xiu Xiu too, and I had to sit through hours of horrible shit to see both Clinic and Ash. This year, even the bands I've heard at confirmed for SXSW are crap. I dunno how I'm going to find quality. I guess I'll try to see Apples in Stereo and Cat Power, as I love both. I'd like to see Black Eyes Snakes too, but they'll surely be scheduled with a bunch of shit punk groups. The Natural History and The French Kicks are back, but without The Walkmen, by far the best of the *Time trio. The Constantines and The Coral are good, but I've seen them both multiple times. Yo La Tengo are okay too, and Supergrass, but most of the 'headliners' are horrible. Polyphonic Spree? The Burning Brides? Fucking Nada Surf? What a wasteland. Out of the 200 bands announced, you'd think there'd be more than a handful I'd be excited about seeing. Alas, The Fire Theft are not the same thing as The Fire Show, a band I've never been able to see live, and probably never will (now that they're broken up and all). Noise Pop looks even worse. Cat Power and Malkmus will be there, but fucking OK Go will be too. They still have a bunch of bands to name, thankfully. New Music West won't announced for a couple of months still, but as bad as SXSW and Noise Pop look, it had better be amazing. |

| Bumpity Bump With SxSW coming up, I decided to make a list of the performances I will be going to, and bands that I think will be worth the price of a wristband. (list is long) Hip-Hop Aesop Rock - Friday, March 14 at 12:00 a.m. at Venue (418 E 6th St) Personal Opinion: This one of my favorite unknown lyricists. A New York Emcee on the Def Jux Label. Awol One - Saturday, March 15 at 1:30 a.m. at Zero Degrees (405 E. 7th St.) (21+) Personal Opinion: I have alot of tracks with Awol One on it, and admire his style. El-p - Friday, March 14 at 12:00 a.m. at Venue (418 E 6th St) Personal Opinion: This is the owner of Def Jux Records, and is considered the "Timbaland" of underground Hip-Hop. Will be performing with Aesop Rock. Heiruspecs - Saturday, March 15 at 7:30 p.m. at Zero Degrees (405 E. 7th St.) (21+) Personal Opinion: Heiruspecs is a live instrumental band with Emcee's Atmosphere(Slug), Sage Francis, and Aesop Rock. I like the concept of these kinda groups. Ozomatli and The Roots are really great live instrumental rap groups. Jungle Brothers - Wednesday, March 12 at 11:00 p.m. at Emo's Main Room (603 Red River) (All Ages) Personal Opinion: Jungle Brothers, need I say more? Mr. Lif - Friday, March 14 at 12:00 a.m. at Venue (418 E 6th St) Personal Opinion: Hell yeah! Mr. Lif is a Boston Emcee that can make any crowd hype. If you enjoy good Hip-Hop, go to this show. Overlord - Wednesday, March 12 at 12:30 a.m. at Spiro's (611 Red River) (18+) Personal Opinion: I have met this big goofy bastard in person, really cool guy. He is a Austin Emcee (with a live band) with really diverse lyrics. Another performace you shouldnt miss even if you dont like Hip-Hop. Punk/Rock ...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead - Wednesday, March 12 at 12:00 a.m. at Emo's Main Room (603 Red River) (All Ages) Personal Opinion: If your going to SxSW, I'm sure you know them. This show is going to be so fucking packed. I might skip it. The Applicators - Friday, March 14 at 8:00 p.m. at Beerland (711 1/2 Red River) (21+) Personal Opinion: This is a great ALL girl, Austin Punk band. Check out there website: http://www.cornerstoneras.com/bands/...www/index.html Bangs - Friday, March 14 at 12:00 a.m. at Privilege Patio (912 Red River) (21+) Personal Opinion: Havent seen them live, but I enjoy there sound, so I will go check em out. Girl Vocalist. The Coral - Saturday, March 15 at 10:00 p.m. at Stubb's (801 Red River) (All Ages) Personal Opinion: THIS IS THE SHOW NOT TO MISS! This group is the shit. It's like Reggae, Ska, Rock, and Jazz. Check out "The Coral - I Remember When" if you can find it. Any of you UK'ers out there know about this group? I love there sound. The Faceless Werewolves - Saturday, March 15 at 10:00 p.m. at Iron Cactus (606 Trinity) (21+) Personal Opinion: Besides having the coolest fucking name ever, this punk band puts on awesome perfomances. I Am The World Trade Center - Saturday, March 15 at 12:00 a.m. at Tequila Rock (612 E. 6th St.) (18+) Personal Opinion: has a sound that sets them apart from alot of other groups, sounds kinda like a 80's band. Lagwagon - Friday, March 14 at 10:00 p.m. at Emo's Main Room (603 Red River) (All Ages) Personal Opinion: Great skater-punk group, I have some of there old school albums. Lust Murder Box - Thursday, March 13 at 11:00 p.m. at Elysium (705 Red River St) (21+) Personal Opinion: This band is the bomb, very good when heated. Abra Moore - To Be Announced at To Be Announced at To Be Announced Personal Opinion: Not my "Cup o' tea" but a great singer/songwriter. Riverboat Gamblers - Friday, March 14 at 11:00 p.m. at Beerland (711 1/2 Red River) (21+) Personal Opinion: If there was a band of all Iggy Pop's, this would be the closest thing. (My dad says there live shows are insane) Bob Schneider - Saturday, March 15 at To Be Announced at Austin Music Hall (208 Nueces) (All ages) Personal Opinion: ex-Boyfriend of Sandra Bullock, great singer/songwriter. Supergrass - Saturday, March 15 at 12:00 a.m. at Stubb's (801 Red River) (All Ages) Personal Opinion: Great UK band, suprised there playing at Stubb's. Stubb's is the coolest Venue in austin by the way, great ribs. Billy Bob Thornton - Thursday, March 13 at 11:00 p.m. at Austin Music Hall (208 Nueces) (All ages) Personal Opinion: haha, what? I'm going just for the hell of it. Your Enemies Friends - To Be Announced at To Be Announced at To Be Announced Personal Opinion: MUST SEE. | The Coral are excellent. The album is fairly diverse but has their fingerprints all over it ![]() Ones to particularily look out for are Spanish Main Skeleton Key Shadows Fall (Pirate sea shanty rock songs, I'll eat my leg if skeleton key doesn't have you saying "Arrr" and attempting to board other cars while drving along listening to it) Dreaming of You Goodbye (Classy 60'- esque pop songs with some great harmonies, my band covers both of these songs occasionally and they both get an amazing response) I strongly advise you go to see The Coral, you'll get to hear some of their new songs too (which I'm told are amazing) before any of us, lucky you :P I need to listen to the album now ![]() |
