| Van Halen vs. Aerosmith last weekend i was driving with a friend of mine and Van Halen's "I'll Wait" came on the radio. i told him to turn that shit up but he instead changed the station and went with Aerosmith's "Dream On". this ignited a full scale argument over which band is better so i decided a poll would be the best way to settle the dispute. a lot of you probably think both bands suck which is fine, just consider which band sucks less. when making your judgments please consider the entire career of the bands rather than a specific point in their careers. this is mainly to avoid unnecessary sammy hagar bashing. in case you have never heard the songs in question here are some quick youtube links: ![]() ![]() |

+8 Internets | You really needed a neither option, or they both suck or something. Voted VH, Eddie is pretty talented and all. |

+8 Internets | Asking people to consider the entire career puts VH at a significant disadvantage though. You might be just as likely to only consider early VH otherwise. Sure Aerosmith went all pop, but it wasn't synth driven pop with a new lead singer that people love to hate. |

| Proud Communist | No song Van Halen has ever made me feel some of the things "Dream On" has. It's good music, sure, but for songs that really do a number on people, Aerosmith has it locked down I think. Of course, arguing music is dumb and it doesn't matter because it's all subjective anyway. |

| Van Halen all the way. I mean I love Dream On and Walk this Way with Run DMC but Van Halen was the shit back in the day. Some friends told me Aerosmith won band of the millenium. I figured the Stones would just because of their longevity and popularity with that generation /shrug. When I listen to Van Halen rifts like You Really Got Me... ah that's good stuff... Had Van Halen stayed together, and I've argued this many times before, I think they would have been the greatest rock band of all time. Van Halen tunes just make me happy to hear em and David Lee Roth was one hell of a front man for them. I wish they would have set their differences aside for all the fans :*(...

+38 Internets | I way prefer Aerosmith personally. I mean yeah, both bands suck ass today and have for decades (Eat The Rich was pretty good, though). But Aerosmith in the 70's was a phenomenal band, it's just that most people today don't know it. They have so much good shit from around that time. They were up there with Led Zep and the Rolling Stones. Van Halen was mediocre pop/glam-rock from the very start of their career IMO, and I can't stand that shit. Don't get me wrong they had some great songs and Eddie changed the way people play guitars, but I just don't think they have nearly as good of a catalogue as Aerosmith does. Not to mention they're a bunch of cat fighting little bitches. After wiki'ing both bands, it's actually surprising how closely their numbers match. In terms of total albums sold worldwide and in the US, they're almost identical, with Aerosmith having a slight lead. Last edited by Eomer : 06-25-2008 at 10:36 AM. |

+24 Internets | I prefer Aerosmith , anything from the Seventies and then maybe Eat the rich which was a phenomenal album. I also prefer them because I like dirtier hard rock, as opposed to the more cleaner Van Halen Style. IE I like bands like Guns and Roses and such, Bluesy hard rock with sort of a sloppiness to it, like the kind of band you would see in a bar. Van Halen is more the music you expect to hear in a stadium. Not that I don't love me some Van halen but I really only enjoy the Roth era and even then really only the first two albums, Van Halen is an incredible album that I can listen to start to finish and non surprisingly considering my aforementioned love of dirty blues , Ice Cream Man is my favorite tune on that album. Oh and to whoever posted girl you really got me going, yeah Eddie made that riff sound modern but he certainly didn't write it.... Give credit where credit is do kind sir. Panama is fantastic but I am just as likely to crank that song on a nice sunny day and drop my windows as I am Sweet Emotion...... Although Aerosmith did introduce us to rap rock. Maybe bonus points for doing it with run DMC and making it not suck, but even still ,we could have done without that sub genre of music. One of these bands is popular enough with the modern youth to have warranted their very own Guitar Hero game as well... |
