| Yeah, well, I got the Audioslave Live at Cuba DVD, and Cornell fails SO hard trying to sing RATM's "Sleep now in the fire". Sad!

+12 Internets | Funny....I was listening to BadMotorFinger today. As a college freshman in '92, I came up in the heyday of grunge music. Cornell's voice was a cornerstone of that era. And the AiC statement was correct. Cantrell was the creative force most of the time, but Staley wrote a majority of the lyrics. In fact, Staley had a huge part in the writing musically and lyrically of their best album "Dirt". I honestly think Cornell's voice works best in Soundgardens environment. He was good in Audioslave, but nothing touched Soundgarden. I think their era is over, and I would honestly fear a reunion. I just can't see them capturing that sound again. BTW, during the early 90's I saw several of the Seattle bands live. Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Lush, Candlebox, Nirvana, Alice In Chains, and Screaming Trees. I even saw Cornell with Pearl Jam doing "Say Hello to Heaven" and "Hunger Strike". Out of all of those bands, I think Soundgarden won hands down in intensity. Cornell's voice live in that era was a thing of power. |

+12 Internets | Forgot to add.... As I mentioned in another thread, if you are a fan of Cornell's voice and style of singing, check out anything with Ian Thornley. His first band "Big Wreck" or his latest "Thornley", has more of a Zeppelin edge, but truly captures the spirit of early Cornell vocals. |

And he's Canadian so bonus points~ In regards to SoundGardens sound. They did a few songs with basic dropped D tuning, but much of SG's music was in various tunings that are certainly not common. At least in modern rock or American rock I guess. So it really gave them this unique sound. Songs like Spoonman which is basic dropped D sound like a big Rock song but others, mainly on Superunkown are in all kinds of odd tunings. It's frustrating as a guitarist to try and mimic the sound since you'd constantly be retuning your guitars. I never saw them live but they must have had an arsenal of equipment with them. to get that classic sound you need the lineup and you need Chris. Also I heard a rumor or maybe not so much as rumor he's working on his next solo Album with Timberland? I wish he would just get back together with the boys and do more SG songs, or reunite the motherlovebone/Temple of the dog thing and make another album of that, that album was amazing. | |

| Jerry wrote pretty much 80%+ of the lyrics, as well as the music. Layne co-wrote some of the songs, but the ones he had a heavy contribution were typically some of the lower quality ones. (Angry Chair) The man could sing, but an epic songsmith he wasn't.

Soon as I read that I was thinking of Outshined. That really was some powerful singing there. I liked that album better than anything else Chris Cornell has done but I'm sure there's more quality music he's yet to make. Such a shame the grunge music ended, that was the best music since the 60s or 70s imo. Grunge was truly the answer real music fans were looking for after 80s glam rock. There will always be a place in my heart for AC/DC and some of the other quality bands of the 80s but Seattle rolled out the best tunes for quite a few years there that many of us are still talking about. If it wasn't for Queens of the Stone Age, White Stripes, AudioSlave and a few other bands these days that actually get played I don't even think I'd listen to modern rock. I know there's good rock out there because I hear it in the video games I play (Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, Guitar Heros, MotorStorm...). I just don't understand why that music doesn't get any air play. I can't be the only one that enjoys real music, not the pop, fluff, imitation punk etc bullshit that inundates our air waves today...

| I don't know what it was but I couldn't stand Audioslave. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge Rage fan and loved Soundgarden... I just don't think Audioslave embodied either of the bands styles. Not a day would pass where I wasn't wishing they (Rage) would ditch Chris Cornell and reconcile with Zack de la Rocha. (at least in the end I got my wish)

| No he shouldn't. He should crawl under a rock and gargle with razor blades so I'd never have to hear his awful, disgusting, putrid "singing voice". Seriously, this guy just screams like there's a horse standing on his nuts.

I won't argue Audioslave is the best thing or even comparable to the music out of the early 90s but they are definitely one of the few really good bands (imo) since that era. Sometimes I think music went to shit around 2000 because maybe the world didn't end and people had to go on with their lives, but before that maybe, just maybe some bands cranked out some great music because they thought we might not all be here. If not I dunno wtf is wrong w/ music since the turn of the millenium... Edit: I know a lot of people worship Dirt as Alice in Chains best album but Facelift is my personal favorite and most true Chains connoiseurs I know prefer Facelift. Bleed the Freak and I can't Remember are some of the most powerful songs I've ever heard. The only songs off Dirt that come close to those 2 are Rooster and Godsmack imo. If Man in the Box hadn't been played to death I would still consider it one of the top songs off Facelift...

| Ditto. Amazing. My opinion on Cornell is that he is one of my favorite vocalists of all time, the power that he brings to the songs can and will make hits with any band you put behind him. His combination with Rage was perfect IMO. I loved getting a little bit of Rage and a little Soundgarden in every song.

| I hope Chris Cornell continues to improve his music. I loved him in Soundgarden and Audioslave. I never really listened to his solo stuff. I am looking forward to whatever he comes up with. |
