| Here is an essay by Jonathan Lethem that appeared in Harper's regarding plagiarism : The ecstasy of influence: A plagiarism, By Jonathan Lethem (Harper's Magazine) Every single part of the essay is directly lifted from somewhere else to make something new. Haven't you ever gotten the nagging feeling that it was busywork or a futile exercise to revoice something that has been said while you're maintaining the core idea? You're still stealing the idea, so why bother with the formality of it? Forced restatement only encourages shitty knockoffs. Like when you see television commercials where some art director clearly said "ok, make the song sound like blur's song #2 but different enough that we don't have to pay them for rights" sort of shit. Instead, people should be taught to source properly and give credit rather than set up a rule system where you're expected to create something entirely new. Synthesis of ideas is valid to a point. So there's a diff between copying and pasting some shit just to do it, and to make something meaningful, and new, out of those parts. The problem with Girl Talk - and mashups in general - is that they're potentially vapid and rely on the creative efforts of other people to provide the source. Wow that song sounds great! No, the samples sounded great. You're not shunning the system so much as relying on it. I've got no problem with it, it's a footnote in history. I'll remember Rick Astley, KRS-1, Boston and Eazy-E not some douchebag who takes those samples and puts them together to form a "new piece of art" that contains Rick Astley, KRS-1, Boston and Eazy-E. Yeah, I get the point, people have varied tastes. It's possible to like country music, prog rock and rap. Amazing art, really. It is also hard to validate it via craft because the tools take care of that. Creating samples .125ms apart is amazing with analog gear, with a computer? Who gives a shit? So that's where the grain of salt to take it with is massive. You can't hate because it works, you can't love because it's amazing deep art. It's a good party and nothing else really matters. re -> mashup: I'll get a real one done next week, in the recording studio this week ![]() Last edited by Horse : 06-24-2008 at 10:11 AM. |

| MTV Newsroom » Girl Talk’s Gregg Gillis Goes Through New LP, Feed The Animals, Track By Track he is quite possibly the coolest music artist EVER. He won a taco bell contest for "Why your band loves taco bell" and won 500$ worth of tacobell. So he spent it all at once and brought 500$ of tacobell to a show he was doing in his home town of Pittsburgh. Fucking badass. |

| I'm so stoked!!! Tomorrow he is playing in Tulsa, OK -- his second time in less than a year. Plus he's playing at a fairly large venue, I've seen Interpol, The Mars Volta, Wilco, and many, many other bands at Cain's before, including Girl Talk. last time was so freaking sweet, everybody got on stage (see video below) but one of the cooler parts was at the end, he talked about how he used to do "Scentless Apprentice" at the end of his shows and sing-a-long, but he had stopped doing, but because the crowd in Tulsa was so badass, he did it anyway. Also, mid during the show, something got unplugged, so after a pause of silence, it got plugged back in and the music just fired back up and everybody went back to dancing. So fucking awesome, can't wait!! Edit: I forgot, I guess there was speculation as to people not being allowed on stage at first. Like I said this is a fairly well-sized venue, but there wasn't security. So you can hear Gregg saying that "There are no rules tonight" right before starting. And I guess we weren't supposed to, because even as people were climbing on stage, as I hopped up, some guy walked by and shoved me off the stage. But then he walked off and didn't say anything so I just jumped right back up. Really hoping he plays the "Knife" remix again, that one bangs ![]()

| Girl Talk will be at Lollapalooza on Sunday. I dunno if you can get single day passes for that, but that would prolly be worth it. I'll be at his show in Lolla, too ![]()

+2 Internets | So Horse or whoever is was that said he was going to do a mashup wasn't posting anything, so I decided to go ahead and give it a try. Took me a couple hours, wasn't too hard, turned out pretty well and I think it was pretty easy. It's Attached. I still love Girl Talk.
