Travel with Computers/iPods? Watch yourself!

Yeah, I really question the legitmacy of this. I mean it's fun getting up in arms about The Man and all, but no one in their right mind would try to implement such a program. There's just no way. At the moment probably at least 50% of travellers have an ipod or other dedicated music device on them, and if you included cell phones it would be damn near everyone. It would be a logistical nightmare.

This is impossible to implement and would infringe on my privacy. There is no way they are allowed to search my HD for any content unless I am linked to some kind of criminal activity... But they can't just out of the blue search my iPod/HDDs

TrueCrypt - Free Open-Source On-The-Fly Disk Encryption Software for Windows Vista/XP, Mac OS X and Linux

Used properly, there's really no way they should be able to tell you've got an encrypted drive.

First, you create a suitable file that will be used to house the volume. Use .iso, .raw, etc, whatever. Then, you create a basic volume out of it, using TrueCrypt. This is going to be your decoy volume. Put some secret, but not really important info in there. I keep some random website passwords, my vBulletin license info, etc, in there. Then, go back into TrueCrypt, and create another hidden volume inside of the first one. I would suggest not only using a very large and complex password, but also using a keyfile - Compressed documents large than a megabyte or two work best. You'll be prompted to enter the password and the key file whenever you go to mount the hidden volume within the hidden volume. Store the phone number of the woman you're having an affair with, or your confidential business shit, or your gay porn collection in here.

That way, even if you get stopped and they're like "whoah whoah whoah you have truecrypt installed on your computer you're going to mount your encrypted drive right now", you can just mount the throwaway one with your semisecret shit.

Also, if you really have something that's sensitive, disable your page file. That way, nothing gets stored outside of the encrypted drive - Unless Windows fucks up and doesn't lock the shit out of the ram like it's supposed to. But chances are, you'll be fine in that regard.

The difference here, since you apparently don't get it:

FedEx/UPS et al inspecting my luggage is acceptable, as them holding my luggage to inspect has exactly ZERO impact on my immediate travel...say, as in missing a connecting, close to 1K$ flight (oh yea, NOT REFUNDABLE) because some 12 buck an hour wonder decides he doesn't like my Packers shirt, or some shit. I'm NOT advocating the "if it isn't illegal, what do you have to hide" bullshit here....I have legitimate (and carefully inventoried) stuff that needs shipping, but an airline or air marshall would freak out over in nanoseconds...yet a UPS/DHL guy wouldn't think twice about letting benign shit through.

FedEX/UPS etc don't give a shit if it isn't blatantly illegal, so long as they don't need the Feds involved and won't do damage to their planes/people. Since my tools and gear aren't illegal, and only the truly slackjawed fuckwits in the system would take a second look at them without bringing at least one or two levels of supervisor into the mix.
