Vampire Weekend - Self-Titled Album

At first I thought this album seemed a bit too "easy." That is, it seemed cobbled together very quickly, with lots of beats and melodies being reused from track to track. Lyrically, there were some really interesting highs (Mansard Roof) and amateurish lows (Campus, Bryn). Overall, I found the album very inconsistent.

But it's really started to grow on me recently. It's a great album to listen to while running, for instance. The generally up-tempo tracks and interesting sounds help keep a pace going. I'm also finding myself listening to it more and more in the car.

Anyone else have similar reactions to this album? I apologize if there's been a thread about this before, but I couldn't find one.

I enjoyed it, but not incredibly so. I probably owe it another listen or two.

I agree with this. But I also believe they're a good band. They work together well. The songwriting is just way to light to be substantial.

I don't think they're any good, but that's just me!

Yep, definitely overrated. A couple catchy tunes, but nothing extraordinary.

After seeing them live, they're even more generic now. =/

There was "Walcott" and then there was none.

Most every review I've seen of their live show say they can play their songs, but that's about it.

New No Age anybody?

Acquiring the rest of the album now. I had A-Punk on dl after seeing them on SNL not long ago. Compelled me to learn the bassline, thought it was pretty catchy.

I'll have a listen and post a reaction!

Overrated? Without a doubt.

An entire album banked on catchy riffs that'll sound like nails on a chalkboard in a few months, which will result in used-CD bins overflowing with discarded copies of their album? You know it.

I know the knee-jerk reaction is always to pull away from the overhyped stuff. But it's really not altogether as bad as everyone makes it out to be. I like the mixmash of different styles.

Verdict = Overall, quite bland.

Allthough I am quite a fan of The Kids Don't Stand A Chance. I think this is probably their only track that actually has some substance. They should continue in this direction in the future, should they last to see another album debut.
