But I'm going to quit Tool hijacking this NiN thread. I love both bands but I'm really not into NiN anymore, haven't been in a few albums. Maybe I'm a fairweather fan but I only own Pretty Hate Machine & The Downward Spiral and I think my NiN collection is complete.

| I gots to defend Tool, yo. Their music varies wildly, especially when you take tempo and overall orchestration into account. The issue really is Maynard's voice, which is (imo) the single most well know and identifiable voice in mainstream rock today by far. He's the Michael Jackson of rock if you like and remember the 80's. APC was 100% entirely sold on Maynard's voice, anyone who tells you otherwise obviously doesn't understand the reasoning behind Howerdel asking Maynard to do vocals. The guy epitomizes modern rock sound, even though he has become highly experimental in his later years. Tool doesn't sound the same in any way that NIN sounds similar, they both have almost innumerable facets in which they affect the listener. Compare the songs 46 and 2 with the Gaping Lotus Experience and tell me it's the same conceptual band. It's hard to say it is, the only defining and connecting portion is Maynard's voice. Anyway, good song from NIN, where's the next Tool album? =/

| +Internets can now be exchanged for free original thought potions! | From an MTV article from February 14th, 2008: And yes, there's also Tool's fifth studio album to think about. While he wouldn't say much about the forthcoming LP, Keenan did reveal that the band would soon be reconvening to start kicking around song ideas. "We're going to start writing the new Tool record right away," he said. That said, there's no time table for the disc — Keenan didn't say when he expected the band to start tracking the effort, when it might be ready for release or what it might sound like. But with Tool's touring schedule wide open for the foreseeable future, he said it's time for the band to buckle down. He also elaborated on Tool's creative process. "The music always comes first," Keenan said. "We all get in a room, shut out all the extra noises from the other people and what goes on outside the room and just focus on the four of us, where we are that day. And then we just start making sounds." So...Christmas, hopefully? |

I remember Lateralus came out the day I went on my honeymoon. Was at little bed and breakfast in Mendicino, California, this little picturesque town that looks like the town in the Truman Show. Under the assumption I would NEVER be able to find a store near by with a copy, ending up driving like 150 miles up and down the coast with no luck. Back in town, we ended up finding this little record shop literally a mile from our room that had it. Divorced now, and sitting on the beach listening to it watching the ocean is still the best memory I have of the whole vacation.

| I used to hate Starfuckers but the more I hear it, the more I like it. Up until With Teeth it was the only song I disliked by NIN. It sounded so out of place for Trent because it was a personal jab at someone (which I'm sure most of you knew already). I liked Ghosts and thought it was a solid release. Discipline sounds ok I suppose, but his lyrics lately are really killing me. The more recent albums don't feel polished or flow together very well at all. I think his writing is becoming simplistic and migrating towards the mainstream pop audience. I remember spending hours just trying to figure out what some of the metaphors he used on The Downward Spiral meant. I'm sad to say it, but I liked NIN more when Trent was a strung out junkie releasing albums every 5 years. As for Tool... it's absolutely amazing. I can see how some people say it "all sounds alike", but I would point out Maynards voice and Tool's musical style are just so damned distinctive that it's hard not to recognize it immediately. It just doesn't like anything else out there, but the individual songs themselves don't sound alike to me. They need to get back together and pickup the Tapeworm project. That would have been the best thing to happen to my music collection ever. Last edited by Loco : 05-03-2008 at 02:14 AM. |

| Starfuckers was Trent's exploration into Drum and Bass I think. That being said, I love everything this guy puts out, because he will experiment and isn't afraid to put out music some people will hate. I imagine all the pop-music fans who were drawn in by the radio play of The Hand that Feeds were thinking WTF when they bought Year Zero and even more so when they heard Ghosts.

+1 Internets | Actually, I like Echoplex. Again, not my favorite NIN song, but it's nothing terrible by any stretch.
