| Guitar guys: A few pics of my new custom. Built by a luthier named Mike Sherman. He did some of Dime's early axes, as well as a bunch of those crazy ass guitars Rick Nielsen from Cheap Trick used to play. I almost went with a burst on the back, but after seeing what a damn great looking piece of wood it was, I opted for just oil and clear. I play mostly prog/shred/power metal, fwiw. Body: Northern Ash Top: Flamed Anegre Fretboard: Markerless Macassar Ebony Neck: Maple/Wenge Control Plate: Anegre Scale: 25.5" Pickups: Dimarzio Blaze ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() And a few pics of the actual build: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

| Awesome sir, Mike has been doing amazing work for years. I really hope he keeps persuing his extended range line of instruments, he has some damn amazing ideas. In fact, I was just discussing this instrument (yours) last night with my friend. I will be doing a similar 7 string although the entire instrument will be tinted black. Of course, I'll post pics and details on your forum when I get around to the building stages. For those that aren't familiar with Mike's work. Here's a 10-string hybrid guitar that didn't end up working out and an amazing Cocobolo guitar. Mike's site |

| I actually went to Mike's house yesterday. Mother of god can this dude build guitars. Check out the 8 string he's holding. That's me in the middle, taking delivery on Blackie.

| Out of those 3 guitars... I creamed myself twice on the black and the brown...marble finish? (I don't have my contacts in atm details are fuzzy) ![]() But the green one is just fucking hideous. Beautiful custom you got there, tho.

| Here's a couple more pics of it. ![]() ![]() The green one is indeed hideous, that's what makes it awesome. It was a restoration back to stock. This is what that guitar looked like when my buddy first bought it - I thought he was out of his mind.![]() Some almost-famous shredder (whose name escapes me) owned it and decided it was a good idea to sand it down and smack it with a hammer a few dozen times, along with coloring in the frets and basically ruining a ~$2000 guitar. And this is the same exact guitar when Mike was finished: ![]()

| That just blows me away that someone would sand and beat a guitar like that. It makes no sense!! But why lime green and yellow? Is he a Soulfly fan or something. Granted it's an improvement from the battered/sanded look. I really like that black one. But all my guitars are straight 6's... I tried a 7 once, it didn't go over well.

I love it, it's so damn obnoxious, I'm having an old RG550 of mine painted with the leftover green. When I was like 13 (I'm 31 now) I lusted after all of those ridiculous Ibanez color schemes, and Steve Vai was my hero. The kid in me just has to have one. ![]()

| If you don't mind me asking, what'd that 7-string set you back? I really like the look of that guy's work and I'm in the market for a new 6 with nearly those exact features (except I'd like the the bridge to be string-through).

| holy hell... Steve Vai - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Like him or not, not ONE of you would even have considered a seven string if it weren't for Vai. Not one. |
