The "Check This Song Out" Thread

I've wanted a thread like this for quite some time but never got around to starting it, so here goes.

Basically, I thought it would be awesome to have a thread where everyone links MP3s to songs they're currently digging on. It would be nice if they were relatively new songs (we already have plenty of threads about favorite songs of all time, favorite cover songs, etc.).

Rules:
  • You must include a link to an MP3 or a Myspace page containing an mp3. Making a playlist on a site like Seeqpod.com is an even cooler idea.
  • Can be any genre whatsoever.
  • Make sure to include the artist name, and try to include the album information as well.
  • Remixes, mashups, live tracks are all welcomed as well.
  • Major label, independent, and unsigned are all a-okay.

I'll start it out.

1) Cloud Cult - When Water Comes to Life from as-yet-unreleased Feel Good Ghosts (Tea-Partying Through Tornadoes).

I can't seem to get enough of this track. This is a Twin Cities local band that I didn't get into until after I moved out to Cali, and I sort of regret that. This song has beautiful instrumentation and breathtaking harmonies. Takes awhile to get going but once it does, whew. Great track.

2) Band of Horses - No One's Going To Love You from 2007's Cease to Begin.

I'm such a big fan of this band, and even though I don't think any song will ever top The Funeral (listen to that track if you haven't), this one gets closer than any of their others. I also watched a decent video of them playing this song a couple weeks ago on Conan. Here it is:

3) Noah and the Whale - 5 Year's Time

A happy catchy pop song that I've listened to several times today and it's really grown on me. I'm a fan of this for sure.

4) The Mountain Goats - Sax Rohmer #1 from 2008's Heretic Pride.

I've been loving this album since it came out. Fans of neo-folk and the Decemberists might be interested in these guys. His voice irritated me beyond belief for awhile, but it's grown on me and I've really started to love them.

So let's see what you got! What songs are you enjoying lately?

-Tom Brosseau - I Fly Wherever I Go - Grand Forks(2007)

It's pretty simple folk, but the guy has an amazing voice.

In the vein of: The Mountain Goats

- Josh Ritter - To the Dogs or Whoever - The Historical Conquests of Josh Ritter(2007)

His latest album branches out from his folk roots relatively far, but still a folksy core.

In the vein of: Bob Dylan?

- The Books - All Bad Ends All - Thought for Food(2002)

Oh, The Books, how I've loved them. They're an eclectic experimental band that people either love or hate. It still freaks me out when I hear them on the Hummer commercials...it's just so unnatural.

In the vein of: ......

Dengue Fever - Seeing Hands - Venus on Earth(2008)

I don't know about you, but my Zune's been burning for some Cambodian psychedelic pop for years....

In the Vein of: I don't think I thought this all the way through

Some Artists / Bands I'm particularly fond of right now:

1) The Soap Opera Coma - Bring It In For The Real Thing - Album: We Came For The Blood (Independent) - Genre: Indie

Group from my city, worked with two of the guys. Song feature on their MySpace here.

2) Joshua Radin - Closer - Album: We Were Here (Columbia) - Genre: Folk

Has had a number of songs feature on NBC's television show, Scrubs due to his friendship with Zack Braff. Terrific artist none the less.

3) Schuyler Fisk - From Where I'm Standing - Album: Un-released / Un-titled (Independent) - Genre: Folk

You may recognize Schuyler from such films as Orange County and Snow Day, (wiki for ref.). She's quite talented and I'm definitely a fan.

4) The Dangerous Summer - The Permanent Rain - Album: If You Could Only Keep Me Alive (Hopeless / Sub City Records) - Genre: Indie

Stumbled across these guys while browsing Purevolume one day. Love this song, as well as the rest that they have compiled. Just all around good, very polished sound.

It's no Deerhunter, but after a few consecutive listens, I'm also in love with Atlas Sound.
