| recomendations please. I'm in search of some pieces of music. I'm a the point now of not liking anything, and I own a lot. I feel like I'm older then a lot of the people here being 38, and may get laughed at for my music choices, but i figure what the hell, there has got to be some here with similar tasted even if they don't want to admit it. I mostly like rock oriented stuff with a rap tune tossed in here and there.. I play drums so tend to like stuff with a great rythm section. First record I ever bought with my own money Was Detroit Rock City by Kiss. Wore it out. That lead me into enjoying bands like ACDC, Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. My life woudnt have been the same without Led Zepplin and Black Sabbath. All amazing bands. Don't forget Van Halen. Eddie Van Halen was the shit. I don't care who you were, if you dug music, you knew the first time you heard Eddie destroy his guitar music was going to be changed. Then growing up in the 80s I try to forget the flock of seagulls years. In 87 Guns and Roses put out Appetite For Destruction. Blew me away. That ushered in the era of hair and makeup being more important then the jams, I found myself goin back to where I had started with ACDC and Hendrix type of stuff. Along comes "grunge" to save the day, To this day Alice In Chains is one of my all time favorite bands. Dark vocal melodies you never hear in any other band. The 2000's has a few mentions as my tastes have somewhat mellowed. I really dig Coldplay. Say what you want but their music relaxes me. Helmet!! Rage Against the Machine, late 90s/early 2000s just give an unmatched "groove" that you never hear. Hopefully they come out with any kind of album. Unplugged, Live and Raw, Studio, I dont care. Give some more funk! Foo Fighters are pop almost but I dig em anyway. They do try to rock it out. Dave Ghrol needs to get back on the drums more often or at the very least go make another Queens of the Stone Age album as a sit in drummer. Most of the stuff I hear today, no matter how angry or emo, all sounds like some dude behind a desk picked these retards from a picture one at a time and hoped the got a long when they handed them 12 songs to figure out and record as they met for the first time. Call me a cynic. Witout cutting down my old, outdated, played out, looked down on style of music, does anyone have any suggestions, old or new, that may satisfy my need for bands who actually practiced in their garage somewhere, know eachother, write their own songs, and rock the hell out? I cross over a bit too. I'll go from Godsmack to the Beastie Boys, who are underated imo. Everyone of the Beastie Boys CDs has something good and worth owning on it. Anyway, string up my musical preference but at least try to introduce me to at least one new band in doing so. Thanks for your posts =D Music effects me greatly. It has the power to take me from the shittiest days to making me realising it doesnt matter. I own a Stero Shop and have a huge system in my car and home theater room. I needNew stuff to try to anger the neighbors with =) B Last edited by bralan : 02-19-2008 at 10:27 PM. |

| If you want to piss off the neighbors, and be the coolest cat within a ten mile radius, just blast some Captain Beefheart. Trout Mask Replica. Over and out.

| Makes no sense. And to be actually on topic. Nothing is wrong with any of the bands you mentioned. I'm 17 years your junior, but find the music you talk about (which is mostly just before my time) fucking awesome. I love Alice in Chains, Rage, etc. (Not the biggest Van Halen fan, but I can appreciate it) so don't think your music taste is out of date. You mentioned pretty much all the shit that I listen to. Throw in Tool, APC, Deftones, and maybe some Muse; you got my workout mix. I'm actually at a loss to give you a suggestion. I am definitely more 'mainstream' than most people in this section of the forum. I have pretty much 0 knowledge on anything 'indie' or 'underground.' I've been mellowing out lately in my off-time with Citizen Cope for some reason. I like Coldplay too when I'm trying to relax or reflect I guess. As far as new "rockin' out" stuff I got nothing ![]() Last edited by Ironhawk : 02-20-2008 at 01:40 PM. |

| Your musical taste seems fairly diverse even though it's all very mainstream. I'll just throw out some different styles of shit that isn't so mainstream, maybe you'll like something. For something bizarre but catchy , Battles For something very heavy, yet technical, Opeth Some classic Tool, I assume you've heard them though. My favorite Gorillaz song...you said you like hip-hop-ish stuff sometimes Some Mindless Self Indulgence, covering Rush Some more heavier stuff, with Dave Lombardo, Grip Inc. Hopefully you like something from there, good luck~

+2 Internets | Smashing Pumpkins - Gish. The drums are sick, the guitar work is sick. It wasn't a band that used music as a faint background to aid the vocals, the guitar was just as important as the vocals. Corgan has a weird voice anyway. I still think Gish was their best along with Siamese Dream. Mellon Collie had some good stuff, but has some garbage to wade through. I play guitar so maybe I'm biased. I learned every good song they ever put out, and it's more fun to play than anything I've tried. One of my faves, especially when I'm baked: Siva is pretty good too. Edit: meant to say I Am One, but Siva is alright too: I don't care for the new album much. They degenerated to the type of band that uses guitar to be a background to the vocals rather than having both be standouts. Last edited by Shaof : 02-21-2008 at 01:19 PM. |

+2 Internets | Battles Their album is called "Mirrored" Check that out. It's John Stanier from Helmet ( you said you like drums right ? ) and he plays live drums with three other dudes that play crazy beats. But I have a feeling you could really like this. I recently turned my friend on to Battles and he has gone head over heels for them... check out this music video: *edit* shit, just noticed HateYou recommended Battles, but it definitely bears repeating

| I really think you would like Opeth. The video in this thread does them no justice whatsoever, and that song is my least favorite of their entire library ( sorry ) Fast and slow progressive metal, nothing too insanely technical but some awesome leads and harmonies. Growly vocals as well as clean. Lots of beutiful acoustic breaks with clean vocals and atmospheric sounds ( not to mention and entire acoustic record, Damnation ) Track times run up to 12 minutes with these guys. again, for someone with an ecclectic taste in music, i stongly reccomend Opeth. This is an old video with some studio footage. Kind of bums me out, as some of the original members have left after many excellent records, but with they new memebers they are staying true to their unique style. Harvest, from 'blackwater park': also, some live, heaviery footage: |

But yes, actually your idea has been the best match for me so far Hateyou. I meant to grab some Wolfmother long ago but for some reason wound up forgetting them. But they jam. Thanks for the reminder =D I'm working on grabbing some Opeth too. Some of their stuff is a bit to heavy for me but some of it is really good. I never really gave them a chance untill now. Thanks for the suggestions. B | |

| Well, most of the bands I would initially recommend were already mentioned, but I thought I'd throw a couple out: Cold - Bleed Stone Sour - Inhale Flogging Molly - "Seven Deadly Sins" Insomnium "Mortal Share"
