| Record Player and Standing Speakers Okay, so I'm looking to buy some audio equipment. What I'd like is a decent record player and two decent standing speakers for said player. I really don't know all that much about speakers, and I know jack shit about record players, so any help is appreciated. For prices, I'd like the record player to be ~$200 or less, and each standing speaker to be ~100$ or less. Any helps? Thanks. After browsing Amazon and other places a bit, I think my price may be a bit low on speakers. I've found some decent looking ones (Sony SSF-7000's and Klipsch Synergy SF-1's) for about $150 each. Anyone know anything about these two, or better in a similar price range? Last edited by Brikker : 02-10-2008 at 10:30 AM. |

| There is only one choice in my mind as far as a turntable goes.... Technics 1200 it may be a hundred or more than you are looking to pay depending on model but you arn't just buying electronic equipment that is gonna last a few years. These things are built like a tank and will most likely still be working after you are dead. |

| Those look really nice after some research, and seem to be very highly suggested; I think a DJ friend of mine has one as well. Unfortunately, $450 for the cheapest one is a bit too much for me since I just want it for basic home listening. I'm going to see if Ebay has any decent Technics up, but any other good brands besides? |

| Okay, so I got a hold of my DJ buddy and got everything I need except an amp/receiver. Any suggestions as to a cheap but decent one? The sole purpose for it will be to connect the turntable to the speakers; nothing more. |

| Well I hope you got technics they are a industry standard and last for 20+ years if not more. I currently have 2 mk5's 1200 with ortofon needles. Make sure to get ortofon or shure white label needles for best sound quality.

| With needles there is a bit more worthy options, but i have always liked Shure needles. Also The funny thing is Technics has not only been the industry standard for 20 years but its basically the same model from 20 years ago. What i mean is Vestax and Stanton and other big name turntable companys have done some wildly different shit over the the past decade or so each year with new models trying to be better than Technics and a turntable thats been mechanically the same since the 80s is still the best ya can get. I don't know shit about speakers myself try shooting Ham a PM if someone doesn't respond to yah soon here. |

| For the needle I went with SHURE M44-7-H TECHNICS DJ PHONO CARTRIDGE - BRAND NEW - eBay (item 360020732236 end time Feb-11-08 18:45:48 PST) after a recommendation. Went with the Technics SL-1200 Mk5; got it used in good condition, so hopefully this will all be good. |

Edit: Make sure that the amp you pick has phono inputs as many don't these days. You can always make our build a phono stage to solve this problem, but I don't think that is the route you are looking to go. Last edited by prescient63 : 02-11-2008 at 12:04 AM. | |

| I haven't actually gotten a receiver yet; does this have phono? Amazon.com: Sherwood Surround Sound Receiver (RD-6500) (RD-6500): Electronics *Edit This receiver doesn't seem to have a phono input, but the upside is we already have it (my roommate had one in her closet being unused). Looking around on the internet someone said I could get a "high-quality phono preamp", whatever that is, and plug the turntable into any receiver input via the preamp. Will this work, and if so where exactly can I get one of these preamp's? *Double edit: Is something like this what they were talking about? Last edited by Brikker : 02-11-2008 at 10:23 AM. |

+8 Internets | Or just get a used Technics receiver off ebay. Straight out of the '80s, will work just as well. My equipment is around 20 years old now and still working fine (Technics).

| Someone who knows tell me if I need http://www.audioadvisor.com/prodinfo.asp?number=CA540P to hook up my turntable to the Sherwood receiver (which appears to have no phono inputs). |
