RIAA - Shooting themselves in the leg, not the foot

IGN: RIAA Plans to Cut Artist Royalties

Quote:
US, February 5, 2008 - The rather loathed RIAA, most recently infamous for pressuring Congress to pass the PRO-IP Act, has now turned its unwanted attention upon the very people the group ostensibly exists to protect. According to The Hollywood Reporter, The RIAA is now pressing to lower the royalty payments made to musicians and artists for music tracks sold via digital distribution. Though the actual artists who make the music are presently entitled to just 13% of wholesale, the RIAA thinks they should receive only 9%.
How quaint.

heh. More and more musicians are just going to skip labels and just release their shit onto the internets alone.

So after cutting out the costs of manufacturing the CD, packaging, and transportation, we've decided to pass the savings on to ourselves and cut artist royalties too.

I read that Itunes dropped the artists royalities to 4%. The mind boggles at why big business hates the artists.

For most musicians there is probably more money in being without a label than with one. Really, the labels only actively support and advertise the handful of big artists that they have. You have a more likely chance of ruining your music career by putting it in the hands of a big label.

I was thinking for a while that the record industry was going to morph into a distribution only type of industry. The nature of modern music is just so polarizing, sometimes I don't think the labels can survive based on the fact that there really aren't big types of music that are universally consumed these days. We're smack in the middle of a canon transition as well as a distribution revolution.

You don't need a big label to distribute lots of albums.

Certainly not big labels. Small labels are probably doing great right now.

I hope they keep following this route. The bigger the assholes they are, at this point, the happier I'll be. How could they be this fucking stupid? Ever heard of self-interest fuckers?

RIAA boss: Move copyright filtering from ISPs to users’ PCs

What the fuck is wrong with this guy? Why would you EVER go on the record saying shit like this? It makes you sound like a tyrant. Yeah, privacy of your PC is cool and all, but what if we could eliminate it in one fell swoop?

I really hope this guy walks into the street and gets fucking hit by a bus.

Listening to your radio loud enough for others to hear constitutes a public performance. That'll be 200,000 pounds please.
