IGN: RIAA Plans to Cut Artist Royalties

US, February 5, 2008 - The rather loathed RIAA, most recently infamous for pressuring Congress to pass the PRO-IP Act, has now turned its unwanted attention upon the very people the group ostensibly exists to protect. According to The Hollywood Reporter, The RIAA is now pressing to lower the royalty payments made to musicians and artists for music tracks sold via digital distribution. Though the actual artists who make the music are presently entitled to just 13% of wholesale, the RIAA thinks they should receive only 9%.

I read that Itunes dropped the artists royalities to 4%. The mind boggles at why big business hates the artists.

For most musicians there is probably more money in being without a label than with one. Really, the labels only actively support and advertise the handful of big artists that they have. You have a more likely chance of ruining your music career by putting it in the hands of a big label.

I was thinking for a while that the record industry was going to morph into a distribution only type of industry. The nature of modern music is just so polarizing, sometimes I don't think the labels can survive based on the fact that there really aren't big types of music that are universally consumed these days. We're smack in the middle of a canon transition as well as a distribution revolution.
