Rolling Stone's Top 100 Songs of 2007

The 100 Best Songs of 2007 : Rolling Stone

I haven't heard most of these songs, but I certainly agree with many. Interestingly enough, of the songs I have heard, I had All My Friends pegged as my number 1 song of the year, and certainly Weird Fishes/Arpeggi and The Past Is A Grotesque Animal as high up there. DANCE too.

Quote:
4 "D.A.N.C.E."
Justice
The breakout tune from the hypercool Paris dance label Ed Banger (run by Daft Punk's manager) is a blast of glitter-disco joy, with a rubbery bass line and an insistent children's chorus demanding that you "do the dance!" Just try to say no!

...

13 "The Past Is a Grotesque Animal"
Of Montreal
The best Bowie homage to mention Georges Bataille since . . . ever? Ever! Almost twelve minutes of emotional turmoil, with an intense krautrock groove full of synths and guitar. Kevin Barnes chronicles the details of a young love gone very, very bad.

...

17 "Weird Fishes/Arpeggi"
Radiohead
Just what nobody expected from Radiohead at this late date: a love song, with Thom Yorke singing like he's been spending quality time with his Al Green records. The guitar takes off from the Velvet Underground, with a lush intensity that's both engrossing and confounding.

18 "Icky Thump"
The White Stripes
Wondering why there were so few great guitar riffs this year? Turns out Jack White used 'em all up in this song.

...

20 "All My Friends"
LCD Soundsystem
Seven minutes of electro disco that capture the ecstatic bliss of a perfect drug-fueled night and the bittersweet comedown that follows. Heartstring-pulling and party-starting all at once.

that rihanna song is TERRIBLE, and seeing brittney spears name on any seemingly credible list concerning music with merit is LOL

Wow, that's not the Of Montreal song that I thought they would have chosen - but it's my fave.

Is there a single name on that list that isn't from the U.S./U.K., isn't either MTV or indie rock, and isn't in some way criticizing Bush with their lyrics?

Evidently that is the criteria to determine quality of music.

What the fuck? It's Rolling Stone, what on earth do you expect? For twenty-five years they have been making a living publishing a magazine about politics and popular rock in the US and UK.

They called in the Best 100 Songs of 2007, not the Top 200 most popular songs in 2007 with a political slant

If you read a list of MTV's best songs of 2007 I bet they are going to be pop and rock and rap. If you read a list of BPM magazine's best songs they will probably be house, techno, and trance. If you read a list of NME's best songs they are going to have pop and indie rock and punk. These are not surprising outcomes.

Likewise, if you read a list of Rolling Stone's best songs of 2007, it will be politically charged pop and rock and hip-hop because that is what Rolling Stone is all about. I don't think it's really surprising that they have failed to perform a super-objective evaluation of every release in every genre of music all year, because that's not why people read Rolling Stone.

Stunned Empty Walls by the SOAD lead singer isn't on there. You'd think it would be right up their alley. I've had that stupid song stuck in my head for two weeks.
