The tags remain there. When digging through the iPod folders, all the songs will be listed as OTGH.mp3 etc. random series of letters, it's how the iPod sorts everything out, but the songs themselves are still tagged with artist/title/album etc. If you drop the window viewing method to "Details" you can see all the tagged info.

You can drag/export/copy right from the iPod folder back into your iTunes library and the songs will sort per the norm, from which, you can load right onto someone elses iPod.

Matter of fact, I'm doing such as we speak. Importing my 80gig video iPod library back into my iTunes to go through it and put stuff into my girlfriends Shuffle I bought her for Christmas heh.

Can anyone tell me how to enable the disk on an iPhone to rip my music from it to my computer? Many thanks in advance!

I have an Iphone, and I LOATHE the way Itunes works. In my opinion, it should be nothing more than simple directory structure. Dock your Ipod/Iphone, and the devices AND your computer lists it's file/folders with options like Music, Movies, Pictures, etc., allowing you to drag and drop between the two.

The fact that I can't grab a buddies Ipod/Iphone and kick him a few songs from my computer without obliterating his shit is just lame beyond words.

Blame the record companies, I'm sure the way iTunes and Zune software work is entirely dictated by their distribution deals with the big boys.

I think it has to do with the devices, the actual iPods, whether its an iPod with an actual moving-parts hard drive (old style/videos/touch) or the solid-state drive ones (shuffles/nano/iphone).

I bring my 80gig video to my buddies all the time and snag shit off his pc through iTunes, and he loads his iPods with his shit constantly and vise versa. But the second I try to throw my ladies shuffle on there it wants to sync all the shit off hers.

I can get my music off my Nano just by enabling the disk and making them visable, but I cant do it at all on the iPhone. Oh well, guess Ill just buy it legally.

You can also try EphPod - iPod for Windows (and Linux) :: HOME

I've used it many times before and works fine. Configure it up in the options and it will rip using the ID tags to folders based on the artist etc...

Silly question, but did you/she unselect the "Sync this Ipod upon connection" option in Itunes for her shuffle?
Its in the same place where you click "open Itunes when this Ipod gets connected".

Can someone explain how to carry out the process mentioned on Page 1 (the one that requires no program, all of which seem to now insist upon payment) for Vista? It makes total sense in XP, but for some reason things aren't making sense to me on this new computer with Vista. I am, however, computer-retarded, so I may be missing something obvious. Any help appreciated.

Edit: To clarify, here are instructions from How to Copy Music Off Your iPod or iPhone

1 Plug in your iPod.
2 From the Desktop, go to My Computer and find the iPod (usually designated by a drive letter. i e. E: or F
3 Open the damn thing.
4 Go to Tools > Folder Options > View (the tab) > scroll to Show Hidden Files and Folders and click it.
5 Click OK
6 Go back to your iPod folder/drive, there you will find a new folder called iPod_Control
7 Open it.
8 The Music folder in it will have a bunch of folders named F00, F01 and so on. THEY HAVE YOUR MP3s. Look through the folders to find your stuff.

I get through Step 3 just fine, but there is no 'Tools' drop-down that I can see in Vista that allows me to access 'Folder Options' and so on. HALP.

(Based on Win7 if you have a different OS, play around)
Try Windows/Start button> Control Panel > Appearance and Personalization> Folder Options > change tab to "VIEW" > scroll down, and select "Show Hidden files, folders, and drives"

btw- anyone know a decent way to convert the ipod m4a files into mp3?

Another riddle of sorts, and it's pissing me off I can't figure this out myself:

Successfully transferred songs from my old desktop's iTunes library to my new laptop's iTunes library by way of my iPod. The problem: Somehow there's now a one-song discrepancy between the desktop/iPod library and the laptop library (the former has 916 songs while the latter has 915 songs). How do I, with minimal effort expended, figure out what the one missing song is?

I know the hard way to do it: manually go down both lists until I catch the song that's in one but not in the other. There has to be an easier way though...

One fledgling thought: sync the iPod (which is currently synced to the desktop) to the laptop, which would cause my ipod to lose the one song; then resync it back to the desktop which would result in it gaining back the one song and displaying on the little applet on top of iTunes what that one song is (albeit for only a brief second).

Thoughts?

(This is the hardest I've had to think in a long time.)

If you dont know which song it is, who cares? Is it really worth the time to go through 900 songs just to find it?

a) Yes. Especially since I have complete albums, not just a random mix of songs.

b) Here's how I cracked the dilemma: Segmenting. Highlight swaths of my library, say all 'A' bands, on each itunes library, right click etc see how many songs are there, keep going until discrepancy found, then go line-by-line and now you've got a much smaller 'area' to deal with.

Was going to post a new thread, but since this thread answered my first one, I'll just post my other question here.

I just got done re-tagging songs for about 3 hours on my Ipod so that I don't have an artists name spelled different 6 times, eliminated a lot of duplicates, tagged all the genres, etc. to make browsing my Ipod easier.

Now, since I decided to edit all of these on my Ipod and not my computer, when I do eventually try to re-copy my Ipod collection to my PC, I don't want to have 1800+ duplicates, I just want all the tags on my Ipod to copy over my old songs. It would also be an absolute disaster if my tags from my computer over-wrote my Ipod tags.

My other problem is that I have a lot of songs on my computer that are not on my Ipod. Probably about 90% of them I don't care much about --I put all the music I like on my Ipod so most of it is there-- and I considered deleting my library on my computer and just copying all this back so that I wouldn't lose the tags, but I'd like to avoid doing that. When I move these files back to my computer, am I going to get stuck with a shitton of duplicates?

One last thing: I discovered that I can't even click the "show duplicates" option in the menu on my Ipod, I haven't checked if it works on my computer's Itunes but the last time I used it, it was fine. Any reason this happened?

PS: I disabled automatic updates and syncing after I nearly went insane one week
