I love Protest The Hero. Insane music, mostly understandable lyrics, interesting storyline album(Kezia), and their song on GHII is really fun to play.

Plus a lot of the songs have that epic feeling to it. Where you may just flip a table over and tear the shirt off your back for no reason.

QFT. And for all your unhappiness about us recommending symphonic and power metal, lets see who's playing on the new Ayreon album... Hansi Kursch, Simone Simons, and Floor Jansen (again!)

If you like a mix of male (sung, but with occasional growling) and female (high-pitched but not operatic cheese like, say, Nightwish) vocals I'd also recommend Tristania, Sirenia, and Lacuna Coil. The newer the release, the less likely you'll find growling, especially with Lacuna Coil who haven't used it since their first EP. Avoid their latest album like the plague, it's utter shit.
Now now, you admitted you liked the new Nightwish sound - however, since the singles are the weakest songs on the album, I figured I'd use an old standby (Nemo) for an introduction. Tristania is pretty good, but not if you can't stand a LOT of growling. If you get Sirenia, get the first two albums. The new singer isn't as bad as most people make her out to be, but the first two albums are masterpieces of gloomy, atmospheric metal, and it's hard to live up to them. I can't even describe how, but they're extremely relaxing or extremely invigorating, depending on the mood.

If you guys are now talking about Symphonic Black Metal then you have to talk about Tvangeste

MySpace.com - TVANGESTE - Toronto, CA - Black Metal / Death Metal / Classical - www.myspace.com/tvangesteband

-edit-

Listen to Under The Raven's Black Wing. Best song of theirs imo.

I honestly don't think someone who listens to DragonForce and Blind Guardian and hates the growling side of metal would get into symphonic black metal... but yeah, his choice.

I am liking what I hear right now. Never heard their music before but its not too shabby...

Edit: Could anyone recommend a solid CD for a first time listener to Tristania? I found a couple random samples from Ashes which seemed pretty good. One had a ton of growling, the other very clean, from the male singers.

It sounds like the guy that did the growling is gone from the newest release? Illuminations or something like that. I like the mix of growling and clean vocals so I am leaning towards Ashes unless someone tells me its horrible overall.

Thanks.

Only Tristania cd I have is Beyond the Veil and it's pretty badass; I was impressed and sold by the time the 3rd track rolled around. It's a good mix of epic female vox and the male growling.

Also, if you like that sort of thing, check out Deadlock.. It's straight up solid Melodic Death, with male growling, and female singing. Normally, I despise this kind of combo, since it seems so 'forced', but she fits in perfectly. They're first/only cd is Wolves.

The guy that did the growling for Tristania is Morten Veland and he left after Beyond the Veil (by far their best cd, though they are all quite good). He then went on to form Sirenia, which basically sounded exactly the same as Tristania. Tristania replaced him with another vocalist, and kept on going pretty well. The current guy still growls, albeit not as well or as much as Morten did, and both Ashes and Illumination are worth a listen.

As for Sirenia, their first two albums were excellent. Then they released a lackluster EP, followed by Henriette Bordvik leaving the band. She was replaced with another, vastly inferior, female vocalist, and for some reason Morten basically stopped doing vocals entirely so the entire Nine Destinies and a Downfall album is made up of horrible screeching by a chick who can't sing for shit.

In order, I'd recommend:
1. Tristania - Beyond the Veil
2. Sirenia - At Sixes and Sevens
3. Sirenia - An Elixir for Existence
4. Tristania - Widow's Weeds

followed by the rest of Tristania's stuff in no particular order.

Cool, thanks for the detailed info. Beyond the Veil seems to be the overall fan favorite so I will probably pick up that or Ashes, depending on what the store has tonight.

I haven't been following this thread extremely close, but I haven't seen anyone mention All That Remains. Here is a little youtube sample link:
All That Remains - The Air That I Breathe

Kind of gives you a mix of growl/scream, not overdone, you can still understand him, and some singing as well. Then you've got Mr. Oli Herbert pulling out a ridiculous solo. Check it out.

They also got a chick bass player, so that rocks too.

Some metal from all different genres that are on my play list. Give it a chance before you dismiss it:

Doom:

Solitude Aeturnus - Early 90's, still around today. New record "Alone" is awesome
Candlemass - Late 80's. Ignore the stupid video.
Candlemass - more recent Candlemass.
Trouble - This one was 1990. Their first two albums are doom classics. Find them.

Power Metal:

Gamma Ray - 90's/00's
Helloween - going strong almost 25 years. This song is Ride the Sky from their first record (Walls of Jericho, 1985). It's still my favorite.
Lost Horizon - More obscure, but still a favorite of mine.
Cellador - More modern power metal in the Dragonforce vein.
Blind Guardian - It's a "300" video thing, but the song is Welcome to Dying by B.G.

Old School Thrash:

Sacrifice - As the World Burns
Testament - Over the Wall from their first album. Alex Skolnick is still one of the best metal guitar players ever.
Death Angel - From their first record.
Laaz Rockit - Fire in the Hole
Sepultura - This is Inner Self, from the time before they gayed out.
Dark Angel - This album owned, though the production was atrocious.
Kreator - German thrash
Sodom - More German thrash

Death Metal:

Suffocation - Brutal straight up death metal.
Immolation - More straight up death
Morbid Angel - oldschool death
Dying Fetus - Modern, and fucking brutal
Possessed - From the first real death metal album Seven Churches (1985)
Obituary - Always loved their guitar tone. No blast beats here!

Melodic death:

Been covered well here, but I wanted to include the REAL In Flames, not the gaycore they became after Whoracle: In Flames - December Flower, from one of the best albums ever The Jester Race
Also wanted to give a nod to At the Gates

Black Metal:

Dark Funeral - 666 Voices Inside
Enthroned - Black Metal from Belgium
Immortal - Included them because the character I play in guitar hero totally ripped Abbath's corpse paint.
Satyricon - Mother North from one of my favorite black metal records ever (my avatar).

That kind of reminds me of Cradle Of Filth.

YouTube - AvantasiaHas potential. Might look into them more.

YouTube - EdguyPass. Sounds too....80's, I guess

YouTube - Sabaton Fuck yeah, now that's what I'm talkin' about.

YouTube - Sonata Arctica Yeah, I dig it. Not bad. Keytaur = win?

YouTube - Helloween mmm...maybe. A little cheesy.

YouTube - Running Wild uh...pass

YouTube - Riot Nah

YouTube - Iced Earth They've been suggested to me so many times. I just can't seem to get into them. I keep trying, just...can't.

Off work so I can think clearly now. Less known metal with somewhat clear singing:

YouTube - Savage Circus*sounds similar to Blind Guardian* Very true, but I think I've been leaning more towards Dragonforce recently. Liking speed metal a bit.

YouTube - Demons & Wizards *Bling Guardian singer* Not bad, but do the drums have that shitty snare all the time? Killin' it for me.

YouTube - After Forever*female vocals* meh, I can't seem to get into female singers. Except oldschool like Nancy Sinatra or Patsy Cline.

YouTube - Pyramaze ...mmm...maybe

YouTube - lost Horizonnah

YouTube - Highland Glory Seemed kinda generic. Spirit of Salvation seemed like a better song on the related list

YouTube - Celestymmm...at this point, I'm wondering what makes them different from any other

YouTube - Axenstar Green day vocals with dragonforce drums...pass

YouTube - Vanden Plasmaybe

YouTube - Iron Savior Not bad, really

YouTube - Dark Moor Fuckin' a, I liked that

YouTube - Black Majesty that was pretty good too

YouTube - Candlemassnot bad, I guess. Makes me think of sabbath.

YouTube - MERCENARYSee, the song you linked me would have totally turned me off to them, but then I gave them another chance and listened to My World is Ending. And THAT tune ain't too bad.

YouTube - Manticora Didnt like his voice

YouTube - Dream Evilnah

YouTube - ELVENKINGviolin turned me off, and I used to like Ashley MacIsaac

YouTube - Primal Fear
Might give them another shot later, but right now the singer's voice is annoying me.

I appreciate the help, thank you

Has no one said Old Man's Child yet? If not then he should be mentioned (I believe its only one person similar to Satyricon, correct me if I'm wrong)
