I highly recommend In-Flames. You cant really go wrong with any of the releases but "Come Clarity" is the most recent and has more refined vocals than the earlier stuff. "Soundtrack To Your Escape" is another recent release and is more experimental than their other stuff. Its good IMO, but probably not the best to try for an initial listen to the band as it sounds different than their normal style. The new Soilwork release is pretty good too. But, its again a mix of clean and growled vocals. Fear Factory "Obselete" is a "must have" album in my opinion, even when they are growling its fairly tame. I strongly recommend In-Flames though. It does have some growling, but if you give it an honest try, it works very well for them. | |

| Real Life Apologist | The above Youtube listing is a good batch of suggestions. You sound like a power metal fan in the making. Another great genre that has started coming to fruition in the last ten years is symphonic metal, which is largely a hybrid of gothic, progressive, and power metal... It's pretty much (in my opinion) the ultimate incarnation of melodic metal. A few of the bands you listed dabble in it too, especially Blind Guardian. Their "A Night at the Opera" was a really influential album in the symphonic metal world - as well as, to many, their magnum opus. Rhapsody is a bit cheesy for my tastes, but it's definitely symphonic metal too. Here's my suggestions to add on to Gudrid's list (with some crossover). YouTube - Nightwish - Nemo YouTube - KAMELOT - The Haunting YouTube - Epica - Never Enough YouTube - Lacuna Coil - Heaven's A Lie YouTube - Within Temptation: The Howling YouTube - Leaves' Eyes - Elegy YouTube - Sonata Arctica - Paid In Full YouTube - Symphony X "Serpent's Kiss" YouTube - Therion - Summernight City (they don't make many videos, best I could find) Last edited by FulorianC; 10-31-2007 at 02:11 PM.. |

+11 Internets | I'll agree with the other suggestions given here; you sound like a power metal guy. Symphonic might work for you too, and as someone else mentioned, maybe some newer In Flames or Soilwork to begin your delving into Melodic Death metal, which has both singing and growling in it, and almost all of the riffs are 'melodic' in nature, as in, not ugly dissonant chords and notes. Soilwork - As We Speak In Flames - Take This Life Disarmonia Mundi - Celestial Furnace(Same vocalist from Soilwork) It sounded like the stuff you called "shit" was straight up "death metal"; this stuff is referred to as Melodic Death, and how I got into the genre awhile back. I didn't enjoy straight up "death metal", but now I enjoy some death metal, technical death metal, and some of the "uglier" things in genre. The more you get into, the more you appreciate other things and everything you thought you enjoyed before metal just pales into comparison. |

| Not quite sure how I forgot about them... Yes, Opeth is good. Their style varies immensely between albums though, not that it is a bad thing, but its hard to really define their sound. You could fall asleep to some of them while others are extremely heavy. Windowpane vs Baying Of The Hounds for specific song examples. Then there are songs that combine both facets, "Reverie/Harlequin Forest" is an amazing song that gives a taste of their slower side as well as the heavy stuff. |

| Opeth are Gods among men in metal. Listen to "The Drapery Falls" from Blackwater Park. It is by far my personal favorite Opeth song. You can't go wrong with any of their records. This a live video for The Drapery Falls with the "classic" line-up. Sadly Martin (drums) and Peter (guitar) are no longer with band: |

+11 Internets | Mmmm, Opeth. But he said anything with screaming/growling vocals were "shit", so, there goes a lot of really good metal. Although Damnation by Opeth is a full clean, progressive album by them. |

| I fear I am too late, and another one may be lost to power metal. ![]() Dan Swanö - Moontower Edge of Sanity - Crimson Edge of Sanity - Crimson II Edge of Sanity - Purgatory Afterglow (you can never have too much Swanö) Katatonia - Brave Murder Day is by far the best, but that one has Mikael Åkerfeldt doing the same growled vox he used on early Opeth albums, so you might not like it. Anything recent by them would probably be more appealing to someone who doesn't like death vox. Aurora - EOS Ayreon - The Human Equation (I cannot recommend this album strongly enough to do it justice -- if you have even the slightest interest in prog metal, get it immediately) Evergrey - Solitude + Dominance + Tragedy Fall of the Leafe - Vantage (now that Oink is gone I doubt you'll ever find it to listen to, but it's good enough that I'll mention it anyway) Green Carnation - Light of Day, Day of Darkness (definitely not for everyone since it's one 60 minute song, but it's one of my favorite progressive concept albums) Grey Skies Fallen - The Fate of Angels / Tomorrow's In Doubt (local band from Philly, again hard to find but well worth it) Iced Earth - everything from The Dark Saga to Horrorshow Isis - In the Absence of Truth (some songs have vocals you won't like, but the music is so damn good you might overlook it -- if so, get Panopticon too) Novembre - Dreams D'Azur The Old Dead Tree - The Nameless Disease If you like a mix of male (sung, but with occasional growling) and female (high-pitched but not operatic cheese like, say, Nightwish) vocals I'd also recommend Tristania, Sirenia, and Lacuna Coil. The newer the release, the less likely you'll find growling, especially with Lacuna Coil who haven't used it since their first EP. Avoid their latest album like the plague, it's utter shit. I second the Demons & Wizard recommendation, but only their first album. And if you're going to get into In Flames, you owe it to yourself to at least try to give The Jester Race an open-minded listen. I know several people who "hated death vocals" who changed their minds simply based on that one cd. Their recent albums are a disgrace.
