Killswitch Engage
Avenged Sevenfold
Symphony X
Dream Theater (although NOT the new disc.. it just doesn't grab me at all)
Muse
Slipknot (they rule the theatrical/horror show metal IMO)
Fair to Midland (can't tell you why though)
I don't understand how you can knock a band like Dragonforce then list some of that trash afterwards. Also, I don't think you're understanding what Dragonforce is all about. Like them or not, they shit all over most of the bands you listed. Slipknot? What the fuck.

I really don't see why people have a hatefest for Avenged Sevenfold. I can understand Slipknot somewhat. That said, I've been looking for a rock club type thing in the St. Louis and can't find one for the life of me.

What I've been listening to lately, All That Remains, Avenged Sevenfold, Dragonforce, Muse. Been looking for more similar to or better than this, this thread is helping kthnx.

This is interesting. Maylene and the Sons of Disaster's lead singer was Underoath's lead singer back when they were better. I thought the departure was pretty bitter, suprised they're touring together.

-edit-

Got White Chapel's CD recently. Sounds alot like Elysia, only not as good.

Also got Nearea's latest CD. Sounds pretty much the same as the others, which is a good thing.

I'm into death, more of the more melodic/electronic stuff though, and I dig some black metal (not the poorly-produced shit). Check out my sig for my last.fm.

Most of the people I've seen on this board tend to lean toward the "melodic death" side of things. I don't see many fans of just plain death metal, though I have seen some Nile fans. I still prefer the old guard that's kicking around, like Suffocation, Immolation, Vader, Malevolent Creation, Deicide, Dismember, Entombed (old), etc. Most younger metalheads would probably find them all boring though.

Black metal begins and ends with Dissection as far as I'm concerned. Their first two records will never be touched.

Nile and Vader are pretty cool. In addition to melodic stuff, I love technical death metal like Arsis, The Faceless, Necrophagist, etc.

Edit: Some plain 'death metal' is boring to me though, but I think it's more along the lines of being spoiled with insane Technical Death riffs, or well-composed melodic death.

Also, for some shameless self-promotion, I DJ on Uberguilds Radio Thursdays, 7pm-10pm eastern. All metal, IM me for some requests, or hop in our IRC channel and bullshit about MMO and metal

For new music, I'm definitely into the melodic/doom side of death more than anything else. I can take Dying Fetus, Misery Index, Kataklysm, and a few others in small doses, but Arsis and Bloodbath's first LP are about the only things I listen to regularly. I still like a lot of older 'traditional' death metal; more technical than brutal though, I can't stand any of the ones you mentioned there except Entombed, but I love old Carcass, Death, Cynic, etc.

What's funny there is that you and I would be among the tiny minority of metal fans who actually consider Dissection to be black metal at all.

I'll explain. I find Dragonforce to be an exercise in who can play the most over-the-top fast guitar solos possible. Believe me.. I've tried to listen to them repeatedly, because I don't always like something the 1st time I hear it. But I just can't get into them at all. Doesn't mean they suck, just means I don't like it.

For the longest time I didn't get Slipknot. Didn't like them, thought they were horrible. Then I saw them live and it all clicked. It's a circus. It's all about the live show, and their show is amazing. I've heard them called a Mushroomhead clone too, and I just don't see it other than they both wear masks. I found Mushroomhead to be boring and lifeless.

Avenged Sevenfold is a talented group too. I've been playing guitar for 22 years now, and those guys can play. I happen to really like what they've done on City of Evil and the new CD. I can't stand the 1st and 2nd CD though.

That's the beauty of music as an art form though. Nobody says everyone has to like the same thing, and nobody SHOULD always like the same things. My iPod has everything from Frank Sinatra to Slipknot, and a lot in between like Robbie Williams, Good Charlotte, Paganinni, and Andrea Bocelli.

I can vouch for the "clicking" phenomenom. There are a few bands I listen to that I think, "Man, they have everything I like, why don't I LIKE them?" but then after seeing them live, I'm in love with them.

As far as Dragonforce goes, they're cool to listen to I guess, for what they do, but really don't dig them all that much. Same with Slipknot, but harder for me to appreciate simpler metal now..while I can certainly enjoy it, I won't give it the same respect and nod as I do for complex compositions from my musician background.

My iTunes goes from disgusting Death Metal, to Mega Man soundtracks, to Kelly Clarkson. \m/
