Kevin Moore leaving Dream Theater was obviously their biggest downfall, too bad he lost interest in that style of music. But there's always Chroma Key, if you want to hear his music.

But, you can't listen to music and keep having one album as an example. All musicians have their absolute greatest album and will most likely never release one, that is as good.
I'm just happy that they still are releasing albums still, that have their gems. FII has some good songs, like Trials of Tears, Peruvian Skies, Hell's Kitchen, Lines in the Sand.
Awake is definitely their most complete album, "Voices" and "Space-dye Vest" alone is enough to make it a classic in my eyes. =)

Edit: Some Chroma Key, he's awesome on the keyboard.

Some bands just don't stop releasing really solid albums though, examples being Summoning (first album 14 years ago and still going strong), Drudkh, Deathspell Omega and Necrophobic.

The new Lacuna Coil album is dissapointing as hell.

I'm not sure why I'm even posting this in the metal thread. I'm not sure how to call this album metal.

I heard one of the singles on youtube and was pretty disappointed too. Since dream theater was mentioned recently too, I never got the hype on that band. I know a ton of guys that are so far up their ass, I am surprised they can still breath. They are definately good musicians and all, but thier stuff half puts me to sleep. Though i'm not much a fan of prog-metal at all, aside from symphony X who I think are amazing, I can only think of maybe 2-3 others I've ever heard anything from and liked.

I see they still haven't gotten rid of that goddamned douchebag fagging up Scabbia's vocals. I have not seen any reason that dude needs to be in the fucking band for 5+ years now.

I won't buy another LC album unless Christina is singing 90% of the disc.

Didn't notice any mention of it, but I may of missed it. What do people think of the new Heaven and Hell album? I honestly haven't heard much of it, but my friend was telling me it reminds him alot of Dehumanizer. That's a tall order considering that's like his favorite Dio Sabbath.

Woah, I'm a huge Dream Theater fanboi, so I'll let most of this go, but you didn't think Scenes From a Memory was a great album? I agree that Awake is their best album, but I wouldn't discount SFAM. And how are you going to hate on A Change of Seasons?

No hate for Change of Seasons...that song existed way before it was recorded so I consider it from the best era of DT. I just never got into the whole story thing of SFAM. By that time in my life I rarely had time to sit through an almost 80 minute record, and I think that it's best listened to from beginning to end. I actually like Train of Thought better because it leans more toward heavier metal which I like, but a lot of DT fans didn't because it didn't have all the proggy elements.

Quo Vadis are amazing, I love the Montreal metal scene. It's very tempting to move out there just for the music.

Indeed, perfect for just that. I'm having a hard time locating much information on the band - specifically the bassist "Tosin Abasi". He is incredibly talented.

It seems like they're really new, this is their first album.

ANIMALS AS LEADERS - PROSTHETIC RECORDS.COM

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
With the Washington, D.C.-based Reflux, 7-string guitarist Tosin Abasi caught the attention of discerning fans with fierce riffs and fleet-fingered solos that sharpened the edge of the band's politically-minded progressive metalcore. The band's moment in the spotlight was brief, but in that time, the group built a dedicated cult following via extensive touring with the likes of Strapping Young Lad, Darkest Hour, August Burns Red, Animosity, From A Second Story Window and many more.

Soon after Reflux disbanded, Abasi began work on an instrumental solo project as a way to further express his musical personality. The resulting self-titled debut from Abasi's new band ANIMALS AS LEADERS, a 12-track collection of guitar-driven progressive instrumentals with ambient and electronic influences, is a scintillating showcase for one of the finest young guitarists in rock today.

"I definitely wanted to make an album that was 'guitar-centric,' but also interesting from other perspectives," Abasi explains. He succeeded, as his dazzling performances on both 7- and 8-string guitars are flashy and technical, yet also tasteful and melodic. And even though they contain no words, the album's songs speak volumes -- something that's evident from the opening notes of album kickoff "Tempting Time."

"'Tempting Time' loosely deals with some of the time-based societal pressures that come with getting older," Abasi says. "It's about reconciling your place in your life with where society feels like you should be, and understanding the finite amount of time you have in life to do anything."

Although Abasi wrote all the music on the album and played bass in addition to all guitars, he emphasizes that ANIMALS AS LEADERS is very much a band, and the group has already performed several concerts in and around the Beltway. Additional gigs, including a high-profile return to April's New England Metal and Hardcore Festival (where he performed twice with Reflux), will follow.

As for the band's moniker, Abasi says it relates to looking at the world from an animal's perspective, and that it was inspired in part by the book Ishmael, in which the author uses a telepathic gorilla to critique human culture. "A lot of what we do is completely removed from the fact that we're all essentially animals," Abasi recently told the Washington City Paper. "We have a niche on the planet and we have a role in sustainable sort of ecology, but we've gone against our natural calling. The name is acknowledging that we do have more of a natural role on the planet, but it's also like, who would follow an animal to do anything? I think of the name as being both nonsensical and really literal."
