Ministry - The Last Sucker

I believe the CD was released on the 18th, but apparently it's also available for streaming: AOL Music

After I bought Filth Pig Al Jourgensen was dead to me.

I won't even go stream this unless i hear some very good things

Very few bands have committed commercial suicide quite as stylishly as Ministry did with this album. This was the follow up to their most commercially successful album Psalm 69, released in 1992. With 4 year wait between albums as Front man Al Jorgensen put it at this time he was living of DST (Dealer Central Time) which is about 6 months after everyone else, this and the fact the album was totally different to the metally Psalm 69.

On top of that their openness about the drug usage within the band, in the wake of Kurt Cobains death admitting to using Heroin was a very bad thing. Also if we look at the musical climate at the time with Britt Pop at its peak, you have to admit that a dark heavy and uncompromising Album was not going to get rave reviews. Even the heavy metal press slated it, but what do music journalists know about music anyway.

The final factor in this albums unpopularity was that it was not Psalm 70. Psalm 69 had been a great critical success and had significantly widened their fan base, but Ministry did not want to make an album that sounded identical to it. So ultra fast speed / thrash metal guitars were out.

Will have to check this out.

I guess I was one of the few that actually enjoyed Filth Pig. Hell of a lot better than Dark Side Of The Spoon or whatever the hell that album was called, lol. That one was pretty terrible.

Steaming now.... I would say its at least listen-able. Better than the more recent stuff I can remember from them. Some decent heavy industrial type music. Doing its job for me on a Friday at work.

It aint no 'Mind Is A Terrible Thing' though.

I've honestly never listened to Filth Pig, but I have Psalm 69, Land of Rape and Honey, The Mind is a Terrible... and Rio Grande Blood. Comparatively I would say it's more in the vein of Psalm 69 as far as guitar riffs and song writing is concerned. There's also a pretty badass cover of Roadhouse Blues on there.

Reviews are full of shit anyway, it's not like listening to music for free is hard work. I wouldn't say the CD is super dynamic or anything, but I've been listening to it for a few days now.

I think I am buying this after work. I agree that the Roadhouse Blues cover is pretty decent. The song after on the steam (Die In A Crash I believe) is pretty badass.

I do believe there are some vox from Fear Factory on here too.

I copied that review because it was the same thing I thought only more well written than what I could say.
