| What MP3 player do you own/use? In regards to products like ipod, Zune, etc. I just recently bought a 30 gb ipod video and I was dreading having to use iTunes for all of my music management, but it's not too terrible. I was curious as to what other people's experiences were with MP3 players these days.

| Cowon X5 (with Rockbox firmware) and my Motorola E815 phone (which unfortunately can't recognize anything more than a 1GB TF card, but it's good enough that buying a separate flash player would be a waste of $). After using one Cowon player, I doubt I will ever buy another brand.

+66 Internets | Bought a Sandisk Sansa E280. Loved it initially, it's basically a slightly thicker Nano in terms of size. It can also do video playback, but given the screen size, it's fairly pointless. Battery life is good, and you can even buy a spare and replace it on the go (although 4 screws makes that a bit of a pain, but it's nice to have the option). So yeah, I really liked it initially. Until I looked into making playlists for it. As far as I can tell, it's fucking impossible. Other than doing an "on the go" one by selecting songs in the interface, which is clunky as hell. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to do it with WMP10/11, which is what the manual mentions as the method to use. Shit, they don't even recognize the music on the player even though I just sync'd it using WMP. I gave up after several hours of fuckery. I still quite like it, but the playlist functionality is becoming a big issue for me. I don't want to be skiing and have Comfortably Numb come on, I might fall asleep and fall off a cliff for god's sake. |

+24 Internets | Zen creative Micro. It's about a year old and still holding up strong, with no problems at all. Still using the factory headphones even. 's got 5gb, fm radio, you can record the radio (or use a built-in microphone) and it turns them into mp3s for you, The software is incredibly simple to use, and it connects and charges via standard usb2. I love my little zen. Thing is sturdy as hell, too. I've dropped it on concrete about a dozen times and only scuffed the plastic casing.

I'm using Ety 6i's now, they're better than anything else I've had for a portable, but I've been looking at the ER-4S for a while. I think that's about the most I'd spend on something I'd carry around in public, heh.

| Got a Zune a few weeks ago. Never planned on getting a mp3 player because I thought I'd never use it, but after getting one, I love it. Only reason I went with a Zune is because it was $125. |

| They really shouldn't need an amp. IEMs are made for musicians on stage and they barely take any power to drive. Everyone on head-fi smokes a little too much amp crack. Realistically if the amp is driven below clipping you are going to have a very hard time telling the difference if it is even possible at all. They have done a couple of tests which no one could tell the difference between pioneer and mark levinson amps. If you want to improve your sound the most head straight for the speakers. I just want a little bit more bass. As a side note most of the op-amps used are stable waaaayyyy past anyone's hearing range. Its the same crap as people talking about $5000 speaker cables that are wound so the high frequencies and low frequencies get to the speaker at the same time. Its all well and good, but i hate to break it to them that the effect doesn't come into play until you are in the mhz range. It seemed good in theory to me until i looked it up. I'll trust science over pseudo-my-audiophile-friend's-brother's-mother-can-hear-a-difference-science. Anyhow I have my own views which run contrary to many people over at head-fi's views, but when it comes down to it if the signal in your amp is running on a smd pcb going through aluminum and copper connections do you think it really matters if you use pure silver interconnects. If the signal is going to become degraded it already happened a while ago. I'm way off topic. I don't listen to my music very loudly so it should be fine. I think I only get up to 1/2 if that on my nano. Edit: That doesn't apply to hard to drive headphones like senns, so don't think I'm making a blanket statement Rant off..... |

| I think the biggest concern for amps with IEMs is to remove any hiss or other noise that will come across crystal clear on really high end ones. An attenuator might even be just as effective as an amp, heh. It's certainly not like my Senn HD570 cans that are just unbearable to listen to without an amped signal.
