Good Techno?

Im looking to make a techno mix tape, since my one friend turned me onto some good stuff.

I tend to be real hit or miss with the stuff though, I either love songs or hate them with nothing inbetween. I really like the Eric Prydz "Call on Me", is that a certain type of techno or do you really just have to fish around for good stuff and discover it ?

Go to Beatport or Dancetracks Digital to browse through loads of new tracks in just about every genre imaginable. Can sample each one, and either buy from them or try to aquire it elsewhere.

Prydz is actually on both of those sites, and he seems to be quite house. Not my bag but there's tons of music there to keep you busy for a while.

Prydz would be considered progressive house, but I'd probably need to know what exactly it is about Call on Me that you like. Is it the endlessly catchy repetition? The weird synthy 80's vibe running through it? Different preferences in regards to song specifics can lead you down different paths of 'techno' music.

Besides that, your best bet would probably be to swing by Digitally Imported Internet Radio and just stream all the different types of music they have on the main site to get a taste of some different genres you may have never heard before, as well as some of what you're probably looking for.

It's more or less the synth beat I suppose, because I have listened to other songs that use the same repetition and it doesn't do anything for me at all. His progressions etc I enjoy.

Might want to look into Eurotrance/Eurodance then. Might be what you're looking for with very synth-heavy hooks and a saccharine edge to them.

Look at this thread:

http://www.fohguild.org/forums/milli...e-artists.html

or this thread which has a bunch of specific track titles:

http://www.fohguild.org/forums/milli...ongs-ever.html

A lot of good stuff mentioned on both threads.

Most of the techno I listen to is ambient, so my recommendations lean in that direction. That said, Brian Eno's "Music For Airports", and Aphex Twin's "Selected Ambient Works 85-92" are both decent albums to put on the background while you're doing other stuff. My friends who are very much into house music seem to like DJ Tiesto (howeverthefuck that's spelled).

DaftPunk's "Homework" and "Discovery" are both pretty good as well.

Prydz is progressive house, as someone mentioned before - check out beatport.com and djdownload.com for tracks in that genre.

Prydz is actually the main member of what is jokingly referred to as the Swedish House Mafia: it's 4 guys who occassionally collaborate but largely work and DJ independently of each other - but they have a similar sound. Heavy 80's like synths, supersaw effects, the "farting" bassline. The other 3 are Axwell, Steve Angello, Sebastian Ingrosso.

Check out some of their stuff, it similar to the stuff that Prydz produces.

Prydz also goes under a bunch of aliases: Pryda, Cirez D, Moo, A&P Project, Axer, Dukes Of Sluca, Groove System, Hardform - check those out too.

You might like a recent Prydz release - "Proper Education" - it's a remix of PF's "The Wall"

Also, check out:

"Dancin" (Fuzzy Hair Remix) - Harry "Choo Choo" Romero
"Tell Me Why" (Original Mix) - Supermode
"Everything" (Big Room Remix) - Kaskade
You can listen to samples of all these tracks on beatport.com

Finally, the sound you're probably looking for is a combination of French House and Progressive House. Check out some of Thomas Bangalter's stuff and some of the aliases he produces under (aka "Together")

No, that's dog shit - stay away from that. You won't find anything that you're looking for there and it's sure as hell isn't techno.

Tiesto isn't house, he is trance and very shitty trance at that.

Daft Punk however is in the similar vein to what you're looking for (Thomas Bangalter is a founding member)

Hi. I'm an old grizzled raver who spent a few years working in the local indy dance music store. Let me try to direct you in the right direction. Since few people correctly understand Electronic Dance Music terminology, it can be rough to google stuff, hense you having a hit and miss time with it.

Firstly, "Call on Me" is not Techno, nor is it a certain type of Techno. The word Techno is often used incorrectly, both by people new to Electronic Dance Music, and (sadly) to people who have been around it a lot and should know better. Techno is not a catch-all term for Electronic Dance Music, it is a specific genre of Electronic Dance Music.

If you go online googling for techno, you aren't going to find anything that sounds remotely like that from any reputable site; you'll find techno, which I don't think you're looking for. Here is an example (Ben Simms):

YouTube - Ben Sims, Picotto & Carola @ Privilege Ibiza - 2006-09-07

It's very electronic, minimal, often atonal stuff. It's typically upbeat and banging. While there is a special place in my heart for Techno, it probably isn't accessable to most listeners.

As Araysar said, you're probably more looking for French House, perhaps Progressive House. Personally, I would avoid the Progressive stuff if you like the looped sample kind of sound, as progressive is more syth (read: Trance) oriented.

If you like that kind of sound, I would recommend starting with Daft Punk's "Homework." Here is one of the bigger tunes from that album, "Around the World":

YouTube - Daft Punk - Around the world

Their dance label, Roulé, did a lot to define this sort of sound in the late 90s. Here is a typical--and famous--example (Stardust, Music Sounds Better with you):

YouTube - Music Sounds Better With You - Stardust

Are either of those sort of what you are going for? (Note: the above two examples are old as hell, I'm just trying to feel you out.)

I imagine you would probably like Bob Sinclair a lot too.

If you like House at all, you owe it to yourself to check out Mark Farina:

Mark Farina (this comes from a double CD set he and Derrick Carter did live, pretty easy to get a hold of).

I mean you no disrespect sir, but no self respecting House-Head should ever say that they like Tiesto. Tiesto is a kiddie trance DJ, and perhaps the most overrated DJ in the world.

Just put on Daft Punk's Discovery and your mix tape is complete.

Unless my memory is really failing me, Discovery isn't mixed--their albums usually aren't.

Whenever I put techno on mixtapes, it seems to always be one of these guys:
Akfuken, Photek, Paul Oakenfold, or Markus Schulz. I haven't dug nearly as deep as I should into techno, so my list might seem a bit "poppy" (most especially Paul Oakenfold.)

so you make a mix tape out of minimal techno, micro-house, jungle, DnB, pop and trance?

interesting.

(by akfuken, i am assuming you mean Akufen)
