Top 100 cover songs

Dunno how old this is, just saw it linked on another board. retroCRUSH's top 100 cover songs list. Some gems in there.

Disappointed Metallica's cover of the Imperial March wasn't on there.

Some of those covers were actually better sung by the newer artists. A few that stood out:

#70 "Hallelujah"
by Rufus Wainwright - I think he means the Jeff Buckley version
ORIGINAL ARTIST: Leonard Cohen

#47 "Red Red Wine"
by UB40
ORIGINAL ARTIST: Neil Diamond

#32 "Blue Suede Shoes"
by Elvis Presley
ORIGINAL ARTIST: Carl Perkins

#28 "I Fought The Law"
by The Clash
ORIGINAL ARTIST: The Crickets

#6 "I Heard It Through The Grapevine"
by Creedence Clearwater Revival
ORIGINAL ARTIST: Marvin Gaye/Gladys Knight

#5 "Respect"
by Aretha Franklin
ORIGINAL ARTIST: Otis Redding

The cash cover of Hurt is great, but I love the NIN version equally. Just my opinion people don't freak out if I dissed your favorite old band. Also the fact that "Last Kiss" made the best covers list instead of the worst is questionable.

johnny cash's "hurt" shouldnt be on there

Botch's "Rock Lobster" should

I might've missed but didn't see Donna Summer's "MacArthur Park" or Led Zeppelin's "When the Levee Breaks" on there, those two for sure belong.

I do like their #1 pick tho

Don't get me wrong; I really love and enjoy Johnny Cash's version of "Hurt." But it's overrated in the pop culture landscape of things. People treat that cover as if it's the best thing ever recorded, when in reality, it's only "great." Also, the original NIN version is equally good.

As for their list, I'm kind of happy that the cover of "Roxanne" in Moulin Rouge made the cut. I always got a kick out of that wacky Argentinian dude belting out that song.

I can't deal with their bashing of MJ's "Smooth Criminal," though. They claim that Alien Ant Farm took "...a ridiculously stupid song...and made it a rock classic." That's the most "ridiculously stupid" claim I've ever heard. The Jackson version is 10x better, and is one of the best songs in his already-amazing catalog. The AAF version is fun to listen to every once in awhile, and I'll give those guys props for turning it into a guitar-heavy rock version. But theirs is not superior to the original, and nor should the original be denigrated in any way, shape or form.

Some more thoughts as I read through the list...

- Really happy that Nirvana's cover of "Man Who Sold the World" made the list. This song should be on any definitive "Best Covers" list, in my opinion.

- What's with their obsession with 10,000 Maniacs?

- Given that 99% of Elvis Presley's songs were covers, and that they were almost invariably better than the originals, shouldn't Elvis songs "go without saying?" It's almost an insult to Elvis to list a few of his songs individually. He should get a lifetime achievement award in the field of song covering.

- Soft Cell's "Tainted Love" is a cover? Who knew?

- The Clash's version of "I Fought the Law" is listed at least twice on their list, if not several times...

- The Beatles' "Twist and Shout" is a cover? Who knew?

- Kudos for including Eric Clapton's cover of "I Shot the Sheriff." Totally agree here.

- It's a crime that they overlooked Ted Leo's cover of Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone." If ever there was a case where someone took a shitty pop song and made it really cool, this would be it.

one of the reasons i put Cash's Hurt above the NIN original is the video. it does a really good job of conveying his emotions at that point in his life and it makes the song feel a lot more personal for him. NIN made a great song but Cash took that song and used it as an expression of his life as a whole which is one of the reasons i love the cash version better than the original. it just feels more real comming from him.

I'm pretty much in 100% agreement with Millie's post. I agree about the AAF shit too. Also who knew you listened to Ted Leo? Thumbs up to you

I actually liked the Marilyn Manson cover of Tainted Love a lot, I think I was alone though.

My favorite cover right now is Disturbed's cover of "Land of Confusion" (Originally recorded by Phil Collins).

If you haven't heard it, I recommend giving it a listen.

It's strange to listen to that song because whenever I hear it, I think to myself, "If Collins dropped an octave and sang with a metal edge, he'd sound a whole lot like Draiman".

clearly this list was made by a group of silly indie rock loving bucktooth bastards... any serious list would have included metallica's turn the page and it would have been close to the top. sorry, thanks for coming.

You're not alone by any means. The Marilyn Manson cover is pretty cool. I'm not totally familiar with his catalog as a whole, but for some reason, when he sings that song, it just sounds as though his voice was made for it.

Also, the music video for his version of Tainted Love was pretty hot; not gonna lie.

Oh speaking of Phil Collins the cover that Postal Service did of Against All Odds was better than the original too.

I also like the "faith" cover by the boy least likely too, it's very similar to GM's but different.
