Liars - Drum's not dead

I picked this CD up today (gogo holiday gift cards) after reading about it a few times online. From what i understand its pretty different than their earlier stuff, which i havent heard, but I like it alot.

Kinda hard to describe but its sorta like, droning, indie radiohead maybe? Wierd is prob the best word for it, alot of the drumming is...tribal sounding?

No lyrics sheet but from what i can gather its a concept album about two characters, Drum and Mt. Heart Attack.

Anyone else pick this up (know it came out awhile ago but still)? How does it differ from thier earlier stuff?

The first liars record was almost entirely post-punk. Sounding closer to Joy Division or Arab on Radar than anything droning like Neu! or Einsturzende Neubauten...

The others that I've heard stuck in there were locked firmly in Sonic Youth - Bad Moon Rising mode, but way more stripped down. The lyrics were a bit offputting because of how they came across more retarded than abstract.

drums not dead continues this trend but gives that pulse to it that was sometimes lacking. Their middle stuff is definitely the least accessible, with the first one almost not even fitting into their canon.

If you like this stuff pick up any of these or the other bands I mentioned, it might help you get away from comparing them to radiohead and towards more accuracy

Wire, U.S. Maple, Lightning Bolt, Pink and Brown, Delta 5, Big Black, Bastro, Psychic TV, Throbbing Gristle

US Maple... don't try to take on that band in one sitting, that's all I'll say.

Brilliant, melodic, annoying, and psychopathic music. But good, if that makes sense.
