Megadeth - Gears of War

Apparently Mustaine finished mixing and released the track Gears of War off Megadeth's upcoming United Abominations album. I gave it a listen, seemed kind of mediocre and far from the old school 80's thrash, but here's a link for anyone who's interested.

This sounds like a weak track I'd find on their Countdown to Extinction CD.

You'd think after 20+ years of recording Dave could write some decent lyrics besides cliched military terms that resembled a google search.

megadeth

I was a huge fan back in the early to mid 90s. I loved rust in peace and the older albums. Countdown to extinction was pretty decent but Youthanasia killed it for me. I think I bought that album and I never even bothered to play it a 2nd time through. It was just obvious it sucked. At the time I lived in Orange County and they came to Tower Records on release day of the album but I didn't go. After I heard it I'm glad I didn't. Seems like every other album they would shitcan the bassist and drummer. I remember flipping through the album covers that come inside the cd jewel cases looking at the new drummer/bassist practically each album. Ah well....

That comment regarding Youthanasia reminded me of an interveiw I read a long time ago.

In regards to Youthanasia:
Quote:
But I think that if you'd been there during the making of Youthanasia, you would have seen why that happened-and why Max Norman didn't produce this album. Max came up with this bullshit formula that every song had to be 120 beats per minute to get on the radio. But someone obviously forgot to tell radio, because as far as I'm concerned, that formula didn't work. Slowing down the super-fast songs ruined them, and speeding up the slower songs ruined them. I still think there are a lot of really good songs on that album and I don't regret it at all.
Regarding the tempo change in newer albums:
Quote:
You know, I can play guitar as fast as anyone out there. I'm very comfortable with it-if I wanted to play all the time the way I did when I joined Metallica, I could. If the music scene returns to those times of speed, thrash, death or whatever kind of metal you want to call it, then we'll make another Rust in Peace.
I just quoted that second one because I'm not sure if I believe that or not. I assume since many people consider Rust in Peace to be one of the best albums Megadeth put out that would be something Dave Musdaine would like to replicate. Since when has anyone given a shit about what genre is popular when it comes to metal anyway?

Old bump, I suppose, but the music video for the remake of A Tout Le Monde is up at MEGADETH.COM - and it rocks. Cristina Scabbia and Dave in duet singing one of the most beautiful songs in metal. This is going to be the first single off United Abominations, and it kicks the ass right off of Gears of War.

Dave Mustaine has become the George Lucas of Metal.

Iced Earth and Gamma Ray (and I'm sure others) have done what he's done, but they sounded great. He ruined all of his songs when he remastered/rerecorded them.

They're coming to Baltimore with Heaven and Hell (Black Sabbath with Dio) and Machine Head on May 19. I'm pumped!

Why does it matter if thrash is in or not? Make the type of album YOU want, David!

I'll be seeing them on May 3rd when they hit Dallas. I'm still in awe Ego Mustaine submitted to being a supporting act, even if its for fucking Sabbath.

Anyway, A Tout Le Monde is not thrash. It's a very melodic piece of metal, and the new version is even more so. I think it's an improvement over what was already his masterpiece.

Love Megadeth. As you can hopefully tell?

Dave Mustanes one goal was to be a harder and better Metallica. And IMO he suceeded in more ways than one.

Of course the group and Mustane is only but a shell of his former self, but nevertheless I would endure 1000 Youthenasias if it meant another Rust in Piece.

Keep wishing man, it's never going to happen. Granted The System Has Failed was the best album they put out in 12 years, it still is a shadow of the bands former glory. I'm old school enough that I bought the Killing is my Business LP back in '85 and wore it out until Peace Sells came along and just slayed. As much as Dave hates Metallica comparisons Megadeth took a similar path, but was obviously much less "successful" if you go by album sales. While old Metallica fans have always waited for another Master of Puppets or Ride the Lightning Megadeth fans have been waiting for another Peace Sells or Rust in Peace. I gave up waiting for that shit ten years ago and just accepted them for what they were, which is something that no longer appeals to me. Peace Sells and Rust in Peace are in my top 20 all time metal records, but everything since has been average to utterly fucking unforgivable (Risk). I will buy United Abominations because I own the other ten and am a completist, but I expect it to be totally average. Honestly I'd rather listen to the Drover brothers in Eidolon than in Megadeth.

Since we're on the topic:

Post some of your favorite thrash albums. They can be old or new. I'm just curious and I'm looking to listen to some things I haven't heard before.
