Great band, I've got four albums of theirs and they are all really good.

Borknagar (start with Empiricism)
Naglfar
Dissection (old, not recent)
Susperia
Agathodaimon (start with Blacken the Angel)
Catamenia
Thyrane
Astriaal (Australian black metal, may be hard to find)
Vintersorg (main guy behind Borknagar's solo project)
Emperor
Arthemesia
Anorexia Nervosa (French black metal, yet surprisingly doesn't suck ass)
Graveworm (anything but (n)Utopia)
Old Man's Child (start with Ill-Natured Spiritual Invasion)
Illnath
Cryptic Wintermoon
Daemonarch (Moonspell side-project)
Dimmu Borgir (the worst of all these bands, but still worth a mention)

I started with the most similar bands I could think of, then went on to things that I think fans of Windir would probably also like.

Damn, Vorph beat me to the punch... as for Dimmu Borgir, don't bother with anything after their first 2 albums ><

Here are some others to check out:
Einherjer (not sure how he forgot this one!)
Falkenbach (this one either, one of the better viking/folk bands)
Moonsorrow (holy crap, another huge one, wtf Vorph?)
Manegarm
Skyforger
Finntroll
Mithotyn
Asmegin
Bal Sagoth

All excellent Blackened Folk/Viking Metal bands worth checking out! Be sure to get those first 3 though, definitely some of the best.

edit: I saw Moonsorrow/Primordial/Thyrfing in Minneapolis last year at a fest, it was most excellent... they are continuing it again this year, with Vreid (Most of the members from Windir, save Valfar of course R.I.P), Skyforger, Manegarm, and Bal Sagoth headlining. I just noticed you're in Germany, but other American Black/Pagan Metal fans may be interested in it... www.heathencrusade.com

Was in the middle of a AB grind marathon, so I just quickly ran down about half the bands in my symphonic black metal folder and didn't even get to the folk/viking stuff at all.

Much <3 for Moonsorrow anyway... Kylän Päässä is one of my favorite songs by any band.

Also, I'd add SuidAkrA, Thyrfing, and Wintersun to the list as well. Maybe Summoning too, although they're a bit of an acquired taste.

Yeah I was thinking about Summoning, but they are just symphonic wierdness...my friend made the comment "they are only black metal because of the vocals," which is pretty true.

Oh yeah, add Ensiferum to that list, too.

Pretty much yea... Summoning, Bal-Sagoth, and stuff like that I usually refer to as Tolkien metal. Without the blackened vox, they'd get lumped into power metal most likely.

The first two Dissection albums, moreso Storm of the Light's Bane, are two of the greatest black metal albums that will ever be released. If you don't have them get them at all costs. To this day I still turn my guitar up to 10 and plow through Night's Blood. A lot of people didn't like their comeback album this year (Reinkaos) but I thought it was a good modern version of the band. With Jon blowing his head off we are left to savor those three records.

I thought Reinkaos was an decent album, just not worthy of having the name Dissection on it. Agree completely about Storm of the Light's Bane though, it will always be one of the best metal cds ever released.

On an unrelated note, the new SuidAkrA album (Caledonia) might just be their best yet.

Guess I should listen to it then, have had a copy of a (real) promo sitting on my desk for probably 2 months now and never got around to listening to it...

edit: err guess it was a promo of their 2005 album, wierd, will have to check out the newer one, too then...

BTW I kind of like The Somberlain better than Storm of the Light's Bane ><

This is as good a thread as any - I've just noticed that Emperor has a myspace page now, since July.

http://www.myspace.com/emperorhorde

Ihsahn's:

Haven't had a chance to check out Ihsahn's stuff yet, except for one song. It was neat.

Ihsahn's album is very reminiscent of Emperor's Prometheus album, which makes sense because Emperor basically became Ihsahn's solo project by the end. It's okay, but I'd much rather toss in Nightside Eclipse or Welkin's and listen to that instead.

I really like Ihsahn's solo album, even though it sounds much like the last couple of Emporer albums. I also enjoyed his Peccatum project with his wife. For some reason, i really enjoy experimental/prog-ish black metal projects more than the old school, blast beat, shitty production black metal.
