Against Me

Ok, me and my girlfriend have this on-going arguement about them. She is absolutely in love with them, claiming they are the best punk/alternative/whateverthefuck. But I hate them.

Now I don't really know much punk. Never got into it I guess, seemed to closet emo for me. But, whenever I hear the singer in this band sing, I get this burning desire to stab myself in the eardrum. I've heared this genre before (not to a real degree, but enough to know what it sounds like), and for the most part the singers atleast gives some tone pitch and listenability.

However, the Against Me singer sounds like an American Idol reject doing punk. I can't seem to find ANY musical quality in his voice outside me being able to laugh at him.

There website,.. www.againstme.net , which seems somewhat outofdate on links (atleast with there music downloads), but please I beg of you guys; If you know anything about them and punk in general let me know. Am I just being over-rash, or do they really just suck?

That’s pretty good. I don’t understand how they stand out above a lot of more talented punk bands (talented punk bands wtf?). They aren't very different or original and actually come off as kind of soft.

I like em alot, to be cliche they're older stuff is alot better than their newer stuff. It seems like you guys are trying to compare them to "punk" bands like Anti-Flag or the Distillers or whatever. Its a different type music, folk-punk or whatever you want to call it.

While there are various other bands that play something similar (This bike is a pipebomb comes to mind) Against me was the one that got noticed (gainesville) and kids that are all tired of...whatever the hell is popular punk these days, latched on and now they're huge.

On top of that they are amazing live and pretty much every song lends itself to sing-along (esp Sink florida sink, those anarcho punks are mysterious and baby im an anarchist)

If you're reading this and you do like em but havent heard the EP's "Crime as forgiven by against me" and "the disco before the breakdown" check those out...much better than eternal cowboy or former clarity.

Pretty much describes my reaction as soon as the singer started singing. The first couple seconds of insturmental work in Pints was pretty groovy, singing made it unbareable.

Same goes for me, I suppose I will never get her to realize that the guy simply can not sing. Maybe it's a punk thing I dunno, but I do know I have heared punk singers that can actually pull a note.

So here's my next question, any suggestions for a happy medium? I'm more metal/metalcore/speedmetal, and she is punk/rap/little metal, anyone got any suggestions on something that maybe we would both like?

I can't tell if the guy that wrote that song is a money grubbing poser that's trying to exploit the certian demographic of gullible suburbanite middle schooler that's too ignorant to see that this bubblegum flavored bullshit has been rewarmed and regurgitated so often and for so many decades that caling it a cliche is a cliche, or maybe the author himself is so stupid that he really thinks that he's being a punk by following in the footsteps of the people that followed in the footsteps of someone that may have truly been a punk.

On top of that, the fucking counter on the band's website's splash page incrementing every time you click the image that only shows you yet another narcissistic image instead of bringing you to the home page is probably the most shameless display of whorish faggotry I've seen on the internet. Ever. And yes, that's including every blog, myspace, and all the postcount farming threads that occur on virtually every message board in existance too.

I will provide this as a pre-emptive flame to anyone that thinks the band in question has proven to be "punk" by virtue of inciting an angry reaction from me: No, you're wrong. The tone that you're unable to hear in these typed words is of pity. These people make me feel sorry for the human race.

That's an awful lot of effort put into trashing a band you apparently don't like. So music god what music do you consider good? Interested in seeing if its anything worth writing 3 paragraphs about how bad it is.

I saw them live in houston in like '00 for like 3 bucks, when i didn't know who they were or what they sang, was just out with some friends who wanted to go. Atleast there's no deception between how they sound on the Cd and how they sound live. Some of their songs are ok, i like the cavalier eternal cd best though.

The sound Against Me is shooting for is a horrible, non-pitched, William Hung meets a squeeling pig of the punk industry? Yeah, then ok I guess there good. However, for people who don't like hearing a tone-def jackass try to pretend to be a singer, they suck.

Oh, and don't give me the whole "there is more to them than what the singer is singing!" crap. I've read a lot of there lyrics, and listened (painfully) to the instrumentals behind them... and honsetly it's crap to mediocre outside of maybe 1-2 songs with decent lyrics. (Both of which have been posted here I believe)

And yes, I AM about bands with a singer/s who can actually sing to fit there genre of music. Without a good singer, it's like riding a bike without a chain.

edit: On a good Against Me note: They do have some serious energy at there concerts. Saw a few videos, and they do seem to pull of a good show for their fans.

cool post. youre still retarded. you dont know anything about punk, so dont make posts about it. you dont see me making posts about how kanye west cant sing as good as rueben studdard. or how the drummer for the beatles cant play double bass as good as the dude from champion. people have different musical tastes. you dont understand the punk genre. its ok. not a lot of people do. just because some people do, doesnt mean theyre wrong or have bad taste.

edit- on a good note, some of the beatles are dead, so they dont make anymore cds.
