History of rock and roll requirement

So I have this assignment due by the first week of May and I'm really not looking forward to it: attending a concert of a band on the Billboard 200 charts and writing an essay on it. I didn't even know wtf the bilboard 200 was until earlier today. I have a passion for music, *good* music. The professor said he is leniant towards allowing class members to see up and coming bands also so I can keep that in mind. What I'm afraid of is being forced to listen to two grueling hours of opening bands followed by even more grueling hour or two of the headlining band due to my lack of mainstream knowledge.

To the topic of discussion. I need suggestions of bands to see around the St. Louis area. Here's basically my list of well known bands that I like quite a bit for some background: modest mouse, muse, radiohead, and uh, oasis isn't terrible. I wouldn't mind seeing them live. I almost exclusively listen to some form of indie. If anyone can atleast suggest some bands that I wouldn't feel like vomiting in the presence of and not waste money, that would be fantastic. Remember they have to be or have been on the billboard 200 recently, 6 months or so.

My first suggestion: Nine Inch nails. They sure aren't indy, but put on an amazing show. Tour dates. If they come anywhere close to ya, go.

Every good band I saw in the current top 100 either isn't touring or isn't coming anywhere near you(lots in europe).. And you have to pay to see the whole 200? wtf? I couldn't find anything about Gorrilaz though. This doesn't seem to be the biggest time for concerts.

As it gets closer to summer there will probably be more shows. Can always hope the new Tool album will be out with them touring by then... Right...

You could maintain your scene cred and go see Coldplay, even though I still think they're fucking horrible, or you could try to catch a Death Cab show or Kanye.

How about Dredg? They're in tour right now and i think their last album sold pretty well. Not to mention that they are awesome live.

I would like to see NIN actually. One of my good friends would love to go along also I'm sure. Dunno if it will be worth the 4 hour drive though for a guy I respsect and intrigues me.

Definetly going to see if my prof will recognize sigur ros as an up and comer, even though I strongly doubt it will happen here in america. Already have a few friends going to that and I wanted to go anyway.

If you have a passion for music and are not able to realize that a solid chunk, if not the majority, of mainstream music is brilliantly crafted, you may have an issue. And I don't mean you have to like it, just realize how and how well it is done.

I'd be happy to hear some suggestions for good music on the billboard charts since that's kinda the purpose of my first post. You're right, there is good music in the mainstream. Maybe I should have worded it to say I have a passion most music other than modern rock ie nickelback, three doors down, breaking benjemin etc. I'd even put new weezer and greenday in that catagory. I absolutely love the beatles, hendrix, bowie and even some alt country.

I read through the current top 100 on the Billboard charts and, if I were in your position, these are the people I would consider going to see:

Black Eyed Peas
Kanye West
Gorillaz
Coldplay
Jack Johnson
Weezer
The Killers

Black Eyed Peas, Kanye and Weezer I would probably go and see for fun. Gorillaz don't do concerts, I don't think. The others I would go see if I had to or if the price was right.

Just wondering why the band has to be in the top 200... or "up and coming" which I assume, means they have a big label and magazine articles about them.

Why does the course feel that those bands will inspire the better essays?

Man, Im not into that sort of music myself, I typically like the harder side of music, like metal and shit. But coldplay is fucking brilliant. If you cannot see how simple and yet so melodic their shit is, you my friend, do not know music.

Just because the guy dosent like cold play dosen't mean he dosen't know music my friend. I know quite abit about music, and being able to play 2 instruments guitar and piano quite fluently and being a turntablist I can sit here and say I dont like the sound of cold play 1 bit. Different taste for different people. I can just flat out tell you the only taste in music is in your mouth for liking cold play, But I wont because you have to respect the listener.
