The hawtin set starts off really minimal - then it ends in hard as fuck intense madness, I dont think I've heard Hawtin ever play that intense in a set before. I've mostly just heard his minimal-sets.

But, top notch.

Just starting on the Magda sets now, I really like the sound she's moved towards the past while. This is probably one of the best sets of hers I've heard so far - it has a nice deep bouncyness and blippyness to it.

either way, if you like techno - these are def worth checking out

Pretty damn sweet, solid listens all the way around. Hawtin is one of the best out there currently, possibly the best depending on your preference of style.

Hawtin, Troy Pierce and Magda all put out some really stellar sets, and their production work are all top-notch also.

If you havnt goten a chance to listen to hawtins newest CD, DE9: Transitions, I'd highly recomend buying it (not downloading).

If you buy it, it comes as

- CD mix
- DVD extended mix, mixed in 5.1 sorround sound
- MP3 Version of the DVD mix

The DVD comes with a video that is part of a set at time-warp, two music videos, and if you play the mix as a DVD, it will play the songs, but as the songs come in, the names of the songs being used will start to fade in/out as they enter and leave the track.

Theres some parts where he has upto 8 songs layered at once and it sounds amazing. I am pretty familiar with alot of the songs he uses in this mix, but they are so stripped down, re-arranged and layered, its hard to really tell where they begin/end, and he'll stretch out parts of 1 song, over 5 or 6 songs.

I downloaded a copy of it first, and was so impressed and wanted to see what was on the DVD, I went out to buy it. Also, I like the fact he included the MP3 with it, and is doing things with new technology that actually promotes people to go out and buy his stuff instead of using lame sony-like DRM tactics to try and increase sales.

Despite being an amazing CD to listen to (and worth the money), the fact that he's doing things to make you WANT to buy the CD instead of downloading it is also cool - and thought I should support that. I'd rather there be 'value-added' to CDs to encourage me to buy them, and not lame ass tactics by the RIAA to force me to buy them.

That being said, if you use soulseek, my user name on there is kaniz, I have a fuckload of DJ sets shared - most of it is minimal techno, but there is some house in there also. Most of it is good, but there are a few duds in there that I downloaded out of curiosity, ended up sucking but havnt deleted yet.

also have alot of minimal vinyl/etc ripped as MP3 being shared also.

But, IMO *most* of the stuff I have shared is good, but there are some really bad things in there I have yet to clean out :P I have a tendancy to download random stuff of things I've never heard of before just to see if its good or not.

If my memory does not fail me, the first major artist to do that live was Sasha Live @ Maida Vale in May of 2005. He was mixing and re-editing tracks live with Ableton Live in front of a live studio audience of 300 people or so. However, I think Hawtin pushes it much farther than Sasha in this regard. I've seen screenshots of his Ableton setups where you can see he has 20-30 samples, loops, and cuts all lined up, ready to overlapped and re-edited as he likes. The difference though is that Hawtin's musical style (minimal, techno) lends itself much better to that kind of layering than Sasha's kind of music.

Then again, I'm biased, not much of a minimal fan - it bores me.
