Ambience/Instrumental

Dunno if anyone else is like me, but I love ambient/piano/instrumental shit, etc. but...

Some good bands:
Everett (http://www.myspace.com/theeverett)
Ambient Generation
Teargas & Plateglass
Saru
Four Tet
Cyril Morin
Explosions in the Sky
Casino Vs. Japan
Populous

some of these bands are kinda hard to come across, but if you have Soulseek my username is Slipz, feel free to get em.

I was meant to be going to see Explosions in the Sky and Four Tet tonight, but being the cretin that I am I left buying tickets too late. So now I've missed them three times in a row. My choices would be (and some are somewhat cliché)

Mogwai - the kings, they can do no wrong. For one example of their might check out 2 Rights Make 1 Wrong. It's not even their best song, but it's still great.

Do Make Say Think - The best of the Godspeed You! Black Emperor offshots, kind of warm jazzy pop stuff, their two best albums are "&Yet&Yet" and "Winter Hymn," or at least those are my favourites (I dislike overtly jazzy post rock, so I don't like "The Landlord is dead" and I've not really listened to their self titled one that much, though the closing track is awesome.)

Growing - A bit more of a difficult listen. They're a drone band who, if you're in the right mood can sound stunning, but if you're in the wrong mood can sound boring as fuck.

Mono - Slowly growing out of their "the Japanese Mogwai!" tag. The production on their last album (whatever the hell it was called) sucked but it's worth sticking as the songs are quality (they just sound weak and thin thanks to Steve Albini.) Their song "Com(?)" is considered a bit of a genre classic, despite being a rewrite of Like Herod by Mogwai (also a genre classic!)

Pelican - Listening to their progress is quite entertainig, they started out as a heavy as fuck doom band on their untilted EP (Mammoth is probably my favourite metal song of all time) then progressed to a prog-metal sound on Australasia before turning into a great major-key triumphant post rock band on their last album (The Fire in Our Throats somethingsomethingsomething) all three are great in their own rights, but I'd say their latest album is the best entry point if you don't like metal that much.

I'll second Explosions in the Sky and Four Tet too, as they are indeed awesome.

And for instrumental piano pieces you can't go wrong with Moonlight Sonata.

I'll post some more as I remember them.

If you're into punk at all it's worth checking out Rodan, Rachels have members of that band and imo they were really underrated due to the Slint connection.

I also highly suggest anything by DJ krush, he's been around for a while and has some awesome instrumental stuff. Came across him about a week ago and been listening almost non-stop since.

Rodan is awesome. The Shipping News and June Of 44 also came about because of Rodan.

This I did not know, I don't like June of 44 from what I've heard, but I'll have to check out Shipping News.

M83 are another great call. Personally I prefer "Before the Dawn Heals Us" because (cheese alert) it's a bit more of a human sounding record. Their first album was great, but I think they found their true calling with the overblown melodrama of their second album.

Boards of Canada are another good one. I don't know what their new album is like, but "Music Has the Right to Children" is a great electronica record, the computerised childs voice saying "I love you" on the third track is eerily beautiful.

There's also Sigur Ros, they're not instrumental, but they usually appeal to the kind of people that like instrumental music. Ajentus Byrun (however you spell it) and ( ) didn't really impress me that much and I thought the praise they got wasn't that justified, but their new album "Takk" really blew me away. The needless boring wanky bits from their last two records are gone (and the suble electronic stuff from their ep has been added) and what's left is a fantastic album.

Glosoli is a bit of a rip off of Tracy by Mogwai though!

Well, I'm only familiar with Explosions in the Sky out of your initial list, so these bands might be a little off..

The Album Leaf (Ham already said them)
The Books
Barbara Morgenstern (not completely instrumental, she switches around from singing with electronic backing, to odd atmospheric 'songs' to really great ambient music. Also, she's german, but she has a great voice. I had been meaning to make a thread recommending her to some people for awhile, HAM! Anyone who has the remix album of 'Dream of Evan and Chan', she guest stars on my favorite version.. that reminds me of the next suggestion)
Dntel (aka, the instrumental half of The Postal Service)

Most of these have vocal parts on at least some songs, but they fit the same theme as Explosions in the Sky for me.

I downloaded M83/Tristeza/Album Leaf. Gotta say I really love all three.

Recently found a guy named Michael Salvatori, does some cool instrumental work.
Also, a band called Back to Earth...they are really amazing, just found them not too long ago. Mark One is another instrumental/dnb style artist I found today, like it a lot.

Like Zinke said the books is good shit. It's not instrumental, but it's not singing, it's like conversation, I really love their shit. Most of you probably know one of their songs from the MTV aids commercial thing with people dancing around.

While not anything like the rest of the stuff in this thread Yoko Kanno's instrumental stuff he did for Cowboy Bebop and Wolf's Rain is amazing.
