Los Villains, great music but the band never went anywhere. Shame, =/.

Big Sugar unfortunately they've disbanded but the lead has started a band called Grady which is also decent.

The first site autoplays a song when you visit it, the other has two you can download.

For an obscure band: Via Satellite

They classify themselves as ' Ambient / Experimental / Indie' whatever the hell that means. I saw em last year in a really small place and they were amazing.

Band that isn't nearly as well known as they deserve: Buckethead.

Most people only know him since he was in Guns and Roses for a short time and performed with em on mtv. But he's a crazy guitar player, very creative and just kickass. Songs from the album that comes out oct 25.

Bralkan: I use soulseek for those who need stuff. I have the Final Fantasy stuff too.

ToT: post your library or something
Yo La Tengo is a band you might like. The OK Go album is fun too

Blonde Redhead isn't for everyone, but if you like Radiohead or Bjork at all I think you'll really dig them. UNKLE is another I'll throw out you've probably already heard.

Four Tet is a band most people haven't heard of, no real vocals just some ... well, it's more just like noise, but not annoying. (like Mogwai)

I don't even think they have a real site, but if you have soulseek let me know, I can get it to you.

I'll go head and pimp my normal band: dredg. Though they're definately starting to border on the semi-obscure/known line.

Family Force 5

I just heard these guys when myspace had them as a featured artist. Favorite song they have up is ERFQUAKE.

Broken Iris

First heard them when they were in that DMB contest.

a few more.

I wish I could add a band that legitmately nobody has heard, but this list is getting long as is. Just needed to add two:

Godspeed You Black Emperor!

think Mogwai, except all tracks at least 10 minutes. Soul shattering.

and a newer band, hopefully everybody has heard of, but they are definately worth any hype you have heard about them

Wolf Parade

make it three, these two have been in Spin, but again, are just too creative and unique to leave out

The Fiery Furnaces

if you like anything electronic and a brother/sister pair with two incredibly pleasant sounding vocals, then buy Blueberry Boat, download it, whatever, Blueberry Boat is phenomenal.

My fave band U.S. Maple - Letter to ZZ Top

Legal free full MP3 from their first album.

In the movie high fidelity, the singer from this band asks if the store has any Capt. Beefheart in stock, who they were compared to ad nauseum. I guess its fair, but what's great is that in all of their looseness and dissonance, it comes together to form a really strong coherency.

They're still around, but taking a break. 5 essential albums...

Long Hair in Three Stages
Sang Phat Editor
Talker
Acre Thrills
Purple on Time

A good description from The Onion a la 2002:

"From his new album's first moments, vocalist Al Johnson—who, along with guitarist Mark Shippy, was in the redneck noise combo Shorty—provides the only proof that there is any human presence amidst the alien noise on Sang Phat Editor. He chokes out absurdist lyrics in such a stylized manner that they are mostly muted, but still mysteriously magnetic. There is almost no adequate way to describe U.S. Maple, because there sure as hell are no other bands with any degree of success who are performing this kind of music. Envision a drummer, two guitarists, and a gibbering idiot manchild playing whacked-out free jazz, but with no single rhythm to hold it together. And, unlike free jazz, every stutter, stumble, stop and outburst is precisely mapped out. Throw in the essence of some of Pere Ubu's more bizarre moments, metallic cicada buzzings, slowed-down helicopter blades and cartoon twangs, and you might have an idea of what U.S. Maple does. Sang Phat Editor is mind-blowing, twisted anti-funk that will be lost on a lot of people. For those who appreciate it, however, it is absolute proof of the dawning of a new age in music. "

That is about half a step from not being music.
