So yeah, Out of the following 2 lists, what is and is not metal. i'd like to hear your opinions on what makes metal and why the bands you chose that aren't 'metal'

The bottom list I can see in a few ways aren't metal, barley metal at all actually.

Kittie - Nu-Metal, but I hear their latest albums a lot better than the musical holocaust that was their previous release

Its the metalcore and Nu-Metal that people start to bitch a bunch. You will always get a bunch of tools who say, "You listen to Korn or Fear Factory, that isnt even real metal!" Just tell them to grow the fuck up. Good music is good music.

none of these bands are metal. Metallica used to be. Theyre more like easy listening now? dunno. like 95% of that list is Nu-metal or mall metal bullshit, with some random rock and industrial thrown in. Ichu was pretty good at putting them in the correct genre with the exception of a couple.

I seriously loled at this list tho. Did you just go to hot topic and look at the shirts and think 'whoa that shirt has blood and a skull on it, FUCKING METAL!!' Youre like 16 right? Its ok. Most likely you will stumble upon some real good metal bands and reach a crossroads between listening to that or continuing to listen to overproduced, mediawhoring, teen agnst filled nu metal bullshit. However, if I had to make a prediction on what you would pick, Im willing to bet your continue to listen to the watered down flavor of the month bands that you hear every day over and over on the radio.

Lamb of God - Death Metal
Metallica - Thrash Metal up to the black album
Fear Factory - Death Metal early on, then Industrial Metal, then nu-Metal when they released that piece of shit Digimortal, and for the two cds since they got rid of Dino, I dunno... I just tagged them plain "Metal" when I organized my mp3s.

there shoulden't be 55 different sub-genre's for metal, or rap, or hip hop, or pop, or whatever else you listen to.

btw yea that list was gimpy, i only took the bands i've downloaded within the last couple of weeks, pantera and slayer are great bands.

I just dont see what you guys see i guess, is it because bands 'scream' now that you can't class them as 'Metal' ? seems to me metal is about fast paced music.

I'll say it again though, just because a band sees radio play doesn't mean they suck. That means you Warduck. You sound like every other fucking punker I've ever known who flipflops on a band the instant they cut a record deal. OMG FUCKING SELLOUTS, YOUR MUSIC SUCKS BECAUSE IT MAKES YOU MONEY NOW!

Pretty much. Their first CD (Adrenaline) was alot more screaming and hard riffs than anything after that. Around the Fur was pretty badass too, but after that it went a lot more mellow. Personally I prefer the more angry screaming Chino, but I like both sides. He has a good voice and can pull off the slower songs great.

I tend to avoid giving opinions on slipknot, usually because they have a huge "hate" crowd for there style or image or whatever. But at this moment I'd like to point out - they have made decent music which is likeable. Saw them live not too long ago and thought it was a pretty decent gig, this being straight after Slayer played. I preffered the slipknot, but don't shoot me, something Slayer was more about moshing mindlessly to alot of decent sounding metal - but not decently sounding music. Catch my drift?

I think he is more against people like Blaezen who listen exclusively to whatever is on the radio/MTV. It's pretty apparent Blaezen listens to mall music. I've seen Warducks music collection, and he has some stuff that's played on the radio, who cares, everyone likes at least something that's played on it. You're misinterpreting his post.

I agree with his sentiment, people who don't see beyond 96.3 WXTREME fm should be made fun of. Teenagers are probably the biggest offenders, since they have no personality of thier own yet. When you are Blaezens age and still in that same frame of mind it's just pathetic.It's fucking annoying when you try to engage in conversation with someone about music and if you bring up anything that isn't the latest fad on MTV they don't have a fucking clue. BUT, BUT KORN AND SUM 41 R TEH ROXORS. Whatever.
