| Metal Anyone have some metal recomendations? I'm just looking to expand my music collection really. Some metal I know I like, Cradle of Filth, Pantera once in a while, Sepultura (when Max Cavalera was singing) is one of my all time favorite bands ever (anything that sounds similar to them would make me happy), Soulfly of course, SOAD, and some other random bands. I don't like, nerdy D&D horseshit stuff like Nightwish, Dragonforce, Dimmu Borgir (the vocals are just too shitty for me) etc. I'm a big vocals person I think, if vocals sound bad I can't listen too it. The guys that sing too deep, like the one singer on cradle of filth Thanks in advance.

| I would recomend Opeth's Blackwater Park, but then again he does have the whole death metal growl in most of the songs including one of the best, Bleak. Perhaps some early In Flames or Fear Factory? Quote:

+31 Internets | Overkill - Anything aside from the latest album. Opeth Symphony X All I can think of at the moment... Edit: Perhaps he meant when Dani *talks* in his deep voice? When comparing deep, I usually go with Peter Steele.... not Dani Filth. Last edited by Celebrindal : 09-23-2005 at 02:42 AM. |

| Lesse... I'm in to all sorts of Metalish music, from the stuff thats really popular but uncool to like, to heavier stuff, but I'll just list stuff I've been listening to that ya might like. All of these bands either had new cd's recently or will soon and are currently on tour: Arch Enemy (I didn't even know that was a woman for 2 weeks until I saw the video) God Forbid (I saw them open for soulfly, they're a bit more melodic then most metal) Soulfly (new cd is pretty good) Chimaira (same here) Opeth (brilliant) The Black Dahlia Murder Throwdown (straight-edge pit stuff) Obituary Other bands ya might be into: Slayer(though I hope you just forgot to mention them) Lamb of God (I like these guys just a bit, I've seen them 3 times in a year and a half, and would again) Unearth 3 inches of blood (it's D&D themed, but the main vocals remind me more of judas priest) Children of Bodom (if you like keyboards with your metal) Clutch (dunno if they're really metal, more blues/heavy rock, but I saw them at a metal festival, and they're damn good, so I'm putting them in here) Black Sabbath (if you want some of the originals) Mastadon Shadows Fall Trivium Megadeth (Rust in Peace and Peace Sells especially) Bands you may or may not like: 6 Feet Under (Dunno how ya can get much deeper vocals then this, but they put on an excellent show) Horse the Band - On the opposite end of the scale, these guys don't take anything seriously, feature casio keyboards, and invented the form of music 'Nintendocore' Apocalyptica - 4 guys that play classical cellos but love metal. Started out doing metallica covers and now have some good stuff of their own. And now is when someone comes in and lists 20 bands I haven't heard of. There is just an absolutely massive amount of metal bands out there right now. Last edited by DiscW : 09-23-2005 at 03:34 AM. |

Thanks for these band names so far, I've heard of or heard some of them, but some I haven't. I'll start looking for some of these. I didn't list every metal band I've heard or own, just my most favorite styles of metal.

| Sounds like you're looking for Thrash metal, so I'll start there. Some of this isn't strictly thrash, but I didn't feel like making multiple lists. Carnal Forge Corporation 187 Darkane Darkest Hour Face Down (definitely check out The Twisted Rule the Wicked) Fear Factory (Demanufacture, Archetype) Grip Inc. (Power of Inner Strength, Nemesis) Hypocrisy (start with Abducted, but all their albums are good) Machine Head (Burn My Eyes, Through the Ashes of Empires, and The More Things Change) Mnemic Nevermore (start with Dreaming Neon Black, then their newest one, This Godless Endeavor) Pissing Razors (self-titled) Pro-Pain (start at the beginning - Foul Taste of Freedom and The Truth Hurts) Raunchy Scarve Sanctuary (if you really like Nevermore, it's basically the same band) Shadows Fall (all albums are good, but Of One Blood is by far the best) Skinlab (Disembody: The New Flesh) Strapping Young Lad (start with City) SuidAkrA (all albums good, but start with the newest, Command to Charge) Susperia Testament (I prefer Demonic and The Gathering, but you may like their older stuff better) The Crown (Deathrace King) The Haunted Trivium (Ascendancy) And since you said you like CoF, try Graveworm and Siebenbürgen. I like both of them much better than anything CoF has done since Cruelty and the Beast. Last edited by Vorph : 09-23-2005 at 07:48 AM. |

So far I've checked out Opeth, Apocalyptica, and Hypocrisy. Hypocrisy is sounding great so far, Opeth sounds good but the vocals are kind of annoying me. Apocalyptica actually suprised me, I always steared clear of them for being linked with metallica, but I like them alot when there's no singing, which is most songs ![]()

| 80's thrash metal maybe. Metal in general has vastly improved since those days. And how can you mention 80's metal and leave off Testament (and every other Bay-area thrash band)? That's blasphemy. |

| I'm absolutely astounded at Vorph's knowledge of the metal genre. I know horseshit about it, hell I barely know anything by the popular bands that got listed and then he goes and spouts off 6 other bands that are similar in style. I didn't even know there was this many metal bands, geez. I wish I knew that much about any of the genres I really like. |

| It depends on what you are looking for. For me, thrash metal begins and ends with Reign in Blood by the (still) godly Slayer. When people suggest 80's metal bands they typically say to check out the big four first (Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, Slayer) who were of course kick ass back in the day. But when you start digging a little (or a lot) deeper you find better stuff. I'll just list a bunch of stuff that I like. Early to mid 80's European thrash metal: Kreator - Pleasure to Kill, Terrible Certainty Helloween -- Walls of Jericho, Keeper of the Seven Keys Pt. 1 and 2 (avoid everything else like the plague) Sodom -- In the Sign of Evil, Obssessed By Cruely, Persecution Mania Celtic Frost -- Morbid Tales, To Megatherion, Into the Pandemonium Bathory -- Bathory, The Return, Under the Sign of the Black Mark Destruction -- Infernal Overkill, Eternal Devastation Satan -- Suspended Sentence Iron Angel -- Hellish Crossfire Vendetta -- Go and Live...Stay and Die Coroner -- R.I.P., Punishment for Decadence, No More Color 80's "Classic" Metal Warlord -- Deliver Us, And the Cannons of Destruction Have Begun Fates Warning -- Night on Brocken, The Spectre Within, Awaken the Guardian, No Exit (NOTE: Awaken the Guardian is absolutey an essential own for any metal fan. Incredible album) Sacred Oath -- A Crystal Vision Deadly Blessing -- Ascend to the Cauldron Mercyful Fate/King Diamond -- All Omen -- Battle Cry, Warning of Danger, The Curse Lizzy Borden -- Love you to Pieces, Menace to Society Trouble (More doomy than classic, but they own) -- Psalm 9, The Skull Queensryche -- Queen of the Reich, The Warning, Rage for Order, Operation Mindcrime Attacker -- Battle at Helms Deep, The Second Coming Liege Lord -- All Crimson Glory -- Crimson Glory, Transcendence (essential) 80's American/Canadian Thrash: Testament -- The Legacy (essential), The New Order, Practice What you Preach Exodus -- Bonded by Blood (essential), Pleasures of the Flesh, Fabulous Disaster Death Angel -- The Ultraviolence, Frolic Through the Park, Act III Sacrifice (criminally underrated) -- Torment in Fire, Forward to Termination, Soldiers of Misfortune Overkill -- Feel the Fire, Taking Over (essential), The Years of Decay Whiplash -- Power and Pain, Ticket to Mayhem Nuclear Assault -- Game Over, Survive, Handle With Care Forbidden -- Forbidden Evil Possessed -- Seven Churches, Beyond the Gates Agent Steel -- Skeptics Apocalypse Hallows Eve -- Death and Insanity, Tales of Terror Exhorder (the band Pantera ripped off) -- Slaughter in the Vatican, The Law Hirax -- Raging Violence, Hate Fear and Power Wehrmacht -- Shark Attack Blind Illusion -- The Sane Asylum Sacred Reich -- Ignorance There is a ton more if you dig deeper. As for more modern stuff I tend to break the genre's down into "metal", death, black, power and grind. There are a million sub-genres, but that's how I break it down. Some suggestions: Death Metal -- Early Entombed, Death, early Unleashed, Cannibal Corpse, Malevolent Creation, Incantation, Hypocrisy, Morbid Angel (essential), Dismember, Hate Eternal, The Chasm, Sinister, Edge of Sanity, Suffocation, Monstrosity, Deceased, Vital Remains, Deicide, Usurper, Obituary, Kataklysm, Cryptopsy, Carcass Black Metal -- Immortal (essential), Emperor, early Satyricon, Darkthrone, early Burzum, Marduk, Enthroned, Impaled Nazarene, early Dimmu Borgir, Mayhem, 1349, Keep of Kalessin, Leviathan, Xasthur Power Metal (I usually stick to 80's stuff here, but some active bands I like) -- Lost Horizon, Blind Guardian (excluding a Night at the Opera), Dragonforce, Gamma Ray, Kamelot, Sonata Arctica, Iced Earth (first three albums) I put a couple of bands in a class by themselves. All eight of Opeth's albums are essential, and an often overlooked band that was way ahead of its time was Atheist. They were progressive/technical death metal at its best. All three Atheist albums were just re-released. I could go on for days. The day I turned ten years old and heard Number of the Beast way back when turned me into a metal head for life. Between Vorph and I we may own every metal record ever. A good source of metal info on just about every band you could think of is http://www.metal-archives.com/. I'm around 1,000 CDs among all my actual CD's (about 200) and ones I've downloaded (7,000 songs). But, I've listened to at least a little bit of tons of bands that I don't have all their works. | |
