Mogwai breaking the law

I thought this might be of interest to Mogwai fans of the board

64Kbps MP3 version

VBR MP3 version

France has very strict noise polution levels and music cannot exceed 105 decibels. Mogwai are a band clearly not suited for this country, this is an mp3 of their final song in a set where they slowly but surely crank the volume up quite a bit beyond the legal limit.

You can hear arguing in the backround when the song starts to get really loud, that's the venues sound technician arguing with the Mogwai sound technician about turning the volume down. They start fighting over it (which gives the big volume swells) and they then start brawling over it.

Someone should have probably guessed they were going to go over the limit from the sound engineer sneering "105 my arse" at the start of the song

You also get to here people swearing in different dialects and languages!

First off, thank you SOOOOOO much for posting this link.

This isn't completely humor, as the file is 11 minutes long and most of it is just Mogwai. I think you would only find this funny if you are a Mogwai fan.

Not to mention the song is My Father, My King. This song is just hands down amazing, as i call, "It was the song written by god and given to Mogwai to play."

They really truncate this song and not play it fully on this particular download. But when i saw Mogwai live and they played MFMK, at the end one of the guitarists starts riffing the guitar so much, that he has to continually grab the strings that break and pull them off the guitar (no strings were left at the end of the song). These guys fucking rock and this song alone is just fucking music at its best. GodBless Mogwai.

Favorite line was:
"That is why there is ze limit!"

Fucking French. You'll think they are gay too if you listen to this. but download it anyway just for the song, which is amazing even if it isn't the whole thing.

He does that every show... he'll rip out all the strings except the low E and play on that for a while.

that was just something to point out for those who haven't seen Mogwai. But still, they freaking rock.

They're the best band in the world

My favourite bit is hearing the french guy call the Mogwai sound guy a motherfucker in a french accent.

Funnily enough I remember they ranted about this on their website after it happened. Talking about how one snare drum shot at a standard show was over the legal limit in france and what a stupid law it was.

I still feel stupid for not going to see Mogwai supported by Bardo Pond when they played glasgow. I would have probably lost my hearing for good but it would have been the best way to lose it.

I really do want to see Mogwai live though, if only to find out how bone crushingly scary Like Herod is live. I can almost imagine the front 5 rows being knocked flat. They probably had the best ever goals when setting out as a band, the idea that you could form a band who's main goal was to play music so loudly that the wind from the speakers would make your clothes flap.

It was funny reading how Kevin Shields went to see them live, and had to take a step back when the first big bass drum hit came.

that site is live-music heaven, and all their servers are pretty fast. Tons of lossless live shows with good quality.

There's two of Godspeed's new songs on there too. Albanian sounds absolutely stunning, makes me happy to think they might pull out another superb after I thought Yanqui was a bit crap.

The day I found the site I spend most of the day listening to Bardo Pond and Mogwai songs in my college class. I imagine that continuous screaming distortion might have sounded a bit odd only heard through what escaped my cheap headphones.

Couldn't find a "good" copy of My Father, My King. I did just download Rock Action and it's pretty bad-ass so far.

Man, I want to learn some welsh. That is bad as shit (Dial:Revenge). It's really melodic. Maybe I should check out Super Furry Animals.

Rock Action is a really great album. I think it is there most together album, like one you listen all the way through and it all flows well.

As for individual songs, Mogwai fear Satan, Like Herod, Christmas Steps, Summer, Killing all the Flies, Ratts of the Capitol and of course MFMK.

Mogwai seriously tears shit up, Godspeed you black emperor! is pretty good too, but they only do incredibly long stuff. And yes, Yanqui was quite a let down.

There was a translation on the Mogwai site somewhere and an explanation of the song, but it seems to be gone, or more difficult to find.

I remember the explanation though. Dial in Welsh means Revenge, so whenever a welsh person enters an english phone box and picks up the phone they are met with the word revenge, setting a bad tone for the conversation to come.

Super Furry Animals are very good too. Basically a kind of experimental (at times) pop rock group

Hehe they stole this idea from My Bloody Valentine. MBV would play so loud at times the crews from the venues/headlinging bands would start threatening the MBV sound guy with physical harm. They often had to place Kevin Shields sister, who was thier manager, as a buffer between thier sound guy and the angry mobs that would start towards them. They would also turn the monitors towards the audience so that they would get the full brunt of their noise haha!

Their goal of being obscenely loud was actually taken from when Stuart Braithwaite went to a My Bloody Valentine show and noticed that everyones clothes were flapping in the wind coming off the amps. Thus why it was such an honour for them when Kevin Shields said that he had to take a step back when he went to se them live.
