| Isis - Panopticon (Attn: Tool & Post Rock Fans) Think Tool + Mogwai/Sigur Ros + a bit of Neurosis. 7 songs and only one is under 7 minutes (6:47). It's the album of the year for me at this point. Due out in a month or two but it has leaked already... Check it out if you like dark, pulsing, melodic rock... But like 80% of the album is instrumental and the vocals aren't really "singing." It can be found on soulseek, among other places. As an added bonus for Tool fans, Justin Chancellor plays on one of the songs (and he brings his A game, as usual). |

| Comparing them to Sigúr Rós is a rather enormous stretch :P Unless they've gone super-wailing on this one. What's it like compared to their earlier stuff? Is the hardcore element still the main thing or have they drifted into more ambient territory now? |

Here's a link to the album for a few to download... it will go down after a while. http://s7.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=E9...29E5A604E7A78B Keep in mind that Isis is primarily known as a metal band if the vocals on some parts throw you off. Track #3 "In Fiction" is the one featuring Chancellor. | |

| It's interesting that they seem to be following Neurosis's trajectory by slowly moving away from the more metal aspects of their music in that case. As an aside to this thread (though one which may interest the people who're interested by this thread ) Pelican's new material is astoundingly good. Heard them live a few weeks ago and a large chunk of their set consisted of new material that generally outshone their EP and LP (no easy task.)Really looking forward to their new album after hearing it. |

| Isis and Tool both have four letters in their name and that's where the similarity ends. I have a very negative opinion of Tool, but I enjoy Isis tremendously. I didn't expect them to go the direction they went, but after the leap from Celestial to Oceanic, I shouldn't be surprised. The cd is very good. Similar enough to Oceanic to retain the Isis flavor, different enough to be original. |

| They both play a form of arty metal, I think that's the similarity he was pointing out. I don't really like Tool either myself and love Isis, but comparing the two is a fairly reasonable thing. |

| I also find them rather uninspiring. I've never met a Tool fan that wasn't an annoying shit. No offense, I have never met you, but all of the ones I've met have been arrogant stoners. I've heard a million times from their ilk that Tool is "omg so much better live man." Taking their advice I went to see them. I was bored the entire time Tool played. Maynard stood in the back corner and never even turned around but once so that he could berate the audience for living in a predominantly republican state. He had the stage presence and entertainment value of a wet sock, and he was insulting to boot. They only played three songs, Sober, Schism, and the Grudge. Then they went on this 45 minute free form jazz exploration thing. It was poorly performed and excruciatingly boring. The only people that enjoyed it were stoned, but that seemed to be everyone that wasn't me. It wasn't a complete waste of time and money, though. Meshuggah opened. |

+2 Internets | I'm arrogant, but not a stoner. ![]() That's pretty funny. All the tool fans I know who saw them with Meshuggah said that Meshuggah sucked dick. Tool definitely isn't for everyone, that's for certain. It's a shame you didn't have a better experience with 'em. Try A Perfect Circle; you might like them better. Less prog. "noodling" and a bit more mainstream-friendly. |

| It's not they they're not mainstream friendly (this is a thread about Isis :P ,) it's just that they bore me. I quite liked bits of APC's first album, but the second one didn't really grab me. |
