1999

consider 1999 as a phenomenon - a year which gave us fresh, innovative releases we may never experience again.

1999 releases:

matrix

fight club

the thin red line

american beauty

being john malkovich

south park

saving private ryan

magnolia

the sixth sense (thanks: satan's little helper)

I mostly agree with you, but how was thin red line, south park, or saving private ryan "innovative"?

Add The Sixth Sense, delete Magnolia.

Magnolia and American Beauty were stylistically similar films, but American Beauty was the superior film in pretty much every possible way. I have to say the 2000 Academy Awards were pretty much the only time I have agreed with more than 2 or so of their choices for the major awards.

2003 so far has been a great year for movies I think.

Best since 1999 I would say.

Actually, I totally agree that South Park the Movie was incredibly innovative. If you walked into a studio and pitched a musical, animated cartoon about a bunch of foul-mouthed 6 year olds (or whatever age they are), they would laugh you out of the place.

That movie is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen, and easily one of the best satires too.

South Park was easily one of the best political satires to be in theatres for a very long time. And it was a musical that didnt suck!!!

Thin Red Line would have been 100x better if they actually conveyed what Guadalcanal campaign was like and focused on that. My grandfather was 1st Division marines in WW2...the first allied troops to land there. He thought the movie sucked ;P As referance, he thought Private Ryan was good (although he said the RL battles were ALOT worse then what we saw in the flick) and he loved Band of Brothers because he felt it conveyed a soldier's life in WW2 pretty well.

i can't believe i forgot to add in the sixth sense.

as a matter of fact the entire team behind fight club was so distraught from the release of that movie. fight club's ending was deflated because of the similar climax in the sixth sense.

btw: cybsled you're right... blame canada even received an academy award nomination.
