+15 Internets | Books and Book Series? Looking for a decent book series that's interesting. I got to book 4 of wheel of time, but Jordan just began to bore the shit out of me more than keep me interested. I'll admit the 'good' parts of his books are freaking incredible, but maybe that's because you've been bored for 150 pages and you become so pumped something is happening. I like fantasy, samurai, sci-fi typical nerd stuff. Not a fan of legal/crime books, and would prefer some suggestions for those type of books. Thank ya good sahs

| I started reading the first book, A Game of Thrones, of "A Song of Ice and Fire" a couple of days ago and am about 2/3 done. So far it's great, and I'm pretty selective when it comes to fantasy. I'd give it a try if you haven't already. There's lots of good old fashioned intrigue and well-rounded interesting characters, with the occasional dumb one-dimensional character, but the good ones make up for the bad. |

| Song of Ice and Fire and Lord of the Rings are really the only 2 series of books i've read in the past 5 years or so. Please give Song of Ice and Fire a shot, you won't be dissapointed. And for everyone who's only on book 1... oh man wait till the last half of book 2, and then book 3. Book 1 was a little boring for me ![]() |

| Thanks to EQ and all the other games I play, I took a long break from reading books. Recently, though, I have started reading books again. Somewhere on this board, I heard George R.R. Martin's "Song of Fire and Ice" series mentioned, as it has been several times already in this thread. I started reading i, and I am definately not disappointed. The first few chapters of the first book, I was not really impressed, but it only gets better from there. Definately read this series. It will also keep you busy for a very long time, since it weighs in at about 3000 combined pages. You also mentioned science fiction, which I have read a little bit of recently. Most of the sci-fi I have read has been suggested to me by my dad, so as you might expect, these are pretty old: Larry Niven's Ringworld. I have read the first one, not sure if the second, third, and any others are any good. I heard it just gets wierd after the first one. The first one is excellent though. Larry Niven & Jerry Pournelle's "The Mote In God's Eye". It took me a few tries to start this book, because the beginning is pretty boring. Once it picks up, though, it is a really great book. The sequel "The Gripping Hand" came out 18 years later, and is decent, but not great. Isaac Asimov's Foundation series is excellent, as are all of his short stories that I have read.

| Forgot another of my old favorites: Bernard Cornwell's Warlord Chronicles. It starts with "The Winter King." It is basically a story about King Arthur, but told as it might have actually happened in 4th century Britain. Excellent, excellent, excellent series that I have read many times.

| In the fantasy genre: Melanie Rawn's 2 dragon series (Dragon Prince series and Sky Bowl series) are good. While they are very very dark Stephen Donaldson's Thomas Covenant series are good. On the not so dark side are his 2 Mirror of her dreams books - these latter 2 are highly recomended. It's formula stuff but David Eddings books make for enjoyable light reading. They are also easy to put down and pick back up as time permits you to read them.

+25 Internets | If you want some really surreal and fucked up sort of sci-fi stuff, you could try The Dark Tower series by Steven King. It's not a horror or anything, it's actually quite an interesting series. Because of the plot line of the book, it also basically ties in with virtually every other Steven King book, so it's cool to pick up references here and there to past characters and events (The Stand comes up often, as does the ubiquitous evil guy with the initials R.F., fucker shows up everywhere, and lots of references to It). It's kind of like an old Western, in a way. The first book more or less is (it was one of the first books he started to write back in the 70's), and the second and third are more post-apocalyptic sci-fi. The fourth is again more or less a Western, albeit in a fucked up way. The main character is a Gunslinger, the last of his kind, which in his world is kind of like a knight. He is trying to find the Dark Tower, to fix whatever is wrong with it. The Dark Tower is more or less like the centre of the Universe(s), it holds everything else together. And apparently something is wrong with it. It's really hard to explain, but the series is excellent. |

+1 Internets | Books Well, another vote for the Song of Fire and Ice series, it really can't be beat, However if you are an emotional/fragile person, I would probably reccamend you pass. They can be a bit upsetting. Another great book series is the Farseer Assassin Trilogy by Robin Hobb. Theres actually 3 trilogies (Liveship Traders, and the Tawny Man) set in the same world, but start with Farseer and if you like that read the others. |

| A Song of Fire and Ice is simply one of the best series I've ever read. David Eddings was mentioend and is pretty good. It's kind of "kiddy" and forumla, but it's done well none the less. I liked A Sword of Truth up until mid series or so. Wizards First Rule was pretty good though, I'd definatly recommend atleast that. |
