| The plot Here's a basic rundown of the plot. In the year 1867, Japan is ruled by a military warlord the Shogun who uses the Emperor as a weak figurehead. Local Nobles (Daimyos) have chafed under the Tokugawa shogunate for 200 years and launch a revolution (although the Japanese call it a "restoration") and put the Emperor back in power, all be it under their control. Now Japan must modernize itself to prevent the colonialism that is going on in China to spread to Japan. So, they bring in this drunk, depressed Civil War hero (Cruise). Love happens apparently, and a rebellion occurs as Cruise is forced to choose sides. This will be a very historical movie, and a very accurate portrayl of an amzing period of Japanese history that was an odd fusion of east and west. I can't wait to see this myself. Edit: The movie appears to be set in 1876 which places it close to the Satsuma rebellion of 1877 when samurai, angry with the ban on samurai swords, were led by a revered teacher of the Restoration and defeated by the new government forces (Sorry if I spoil the movie by this, but come on, the guns and big government have to win here.)

+20 Internets | I'm glad Cruise is lately getting more and more roles that interest me. Before Interview with the Vampire it looked like he was on the route to be in nothing but chick flicks. Magnolia, MI (one only!), Minority Report, vanilla sky , interview, jerry maguire, all kicked major ass and im confident this one will too. |

| Personally I can't wait to see a full-scale army sword fighting scene. An eastern version of an epic Braveheart battle is not something I have ever seen on the big screen. I'm sure they're out there, but none with modern cinematography like recent films I'd wager. I'd be pleased to be proven wrong. ![]() |

+15 Internets | He's not supposed to be asian. He's American. It's not a new concept to have "outsider accepts Japanese ways". I guess alot of people are too young to remember the miniseries "Shogun" ;(
