Bend it like Beckam

I sawBend it like Beckam over the weekend and thought it was quite good.

I'm posting since it's an alternative film and easy to pass over as it's release is limited.

It's about an Indian girl in England who wants to play Football (Soccer for us americans) but has to battle family obligations and ethnic steriotypes.

Enjoy!

I have got to say, the advertising left a lot to be desired. I was flooded! with signs and words saying "It's the next, My Big Fat Greek Wedding!" Ok, well I hated that movie, and if the only good thing you can say about a movie is that it's like another.... well it kills my anticipation.

I won't be going to see this flick unless someone here can give an actual decent description of what it's like, and if it's worth seeing.

Well, its a british movie originally titled "Kick it like Beckham" (no clue why they changed it for the american audience) and was filmed quite a bit before Greek Wedding.

I hated that Greek Wedding Film, but I had some good laughs when I took my girlfriend to Beckham.

Itīs certainly not a spectacular movie, going mostly along the lines of most teenage comedies. But as teenage girl comedies go its defenitly one of the better ones and quite funny.
Worth seeing if you donīt expect anything overly spectacular.

Do Americans even know who David Beckham is?

It was called "Bend it like Beckham" in the UK. David Beckham is the most famous footballer in the world, apart from in the USA apparently, he's not the best footballer in the world though 8P

( When i say Football I mean Football, not your whimps Rugby )

so it goes like this.....

Bend it like Beckham: A review, the man and the film

Beckam the man *** 3 stars. Competent, entertaining

Beckham the movie ** 2 stars, watch it if you have nothing else to do

Also, Americans may not get as much out of it as people who give a shit about soccer

Beckham is THE man in the Premier league (English football league), plays for Manchester United and captains the england team in the World Cup. he makes a shitload of money, and Real Madrid apparently recently offered Man U $200 million dollars for him. I think he is an arrogant prick (as well he might be when he is loaded and married to Posh Spice ofr Spice girls fame). BUT he can kick a soccer ball like very few others

So the movie is basically about this English girl that is Indian (indian parents) that idolises Beckham and plays soccer (in a park, not in a legue). Her parents, being the strict indians they are, want her to cook, marry and chuck out some kids.

She basically says fuck you, joins a soccer club, is pretty good and plays some soccer behind her parents back till she gets busted.

I wont say any more 'cos it will fuck it up for people that may want to watch this movie. Dont go too far out of your way to see this film, if it happens to be on, it isnt that bad that you will run away screaming

Yeah Rugby is for tough people, I was referring to the guys who strap on a shitload of pads and stand around for ages, then fall over, what's it called again? Oh yeah, American Football.

Hehe

Funny how cultures/norms are different over the countries.

I didn't even take these circumstances into consideration, I presumed everyone knew who Beckham is. But I'm a European myself, so well.

But as it is already said, the title makes much more sense once you have a clue who David Beckham really is. And yes, you can somewhat discuss if he's comparable to NBA's Michael Jordan. But it's a pretty close example. Soccer/football isn't the most famous sport in USA/Canada, but well..

Beckham made a brilliant goal a few days ago at the Champions League match against Real Madrid (Real Madrid, imo the best team in the world. They're fascinating), but sadly it wasn't enough to make the advance.

.. and to add.

I guess for many people that doesn't have the biggest interest, will have trouble empathizing with the indial girl and her dreams. But I guess its still the same, can just switch out a sport for that matter, hehe So the message is the same..
