| Glengarry Glen Ross Out on DVD recently and picked it up. First time I have seen it since it was in theaters (though I saw a play of it last year). If you have never seen this movie can't reccomend it enough. With out a doubt some of the best acting in a movie ever. Alec Baldwin's scene has to be one of the best scenes ever put to film. Quote:

| Jack Lemon Every actor in GGGR set a standard for those to follow. In particular, Jack Lemon blows you away with his "clinging to the edge" vitriol (when talking shit to Spacey's character about the deal he blows for Pacino's character) and later his pathetic desperation when Spacey's character finds out about the theft and sticks it to Lemon's character. I'd say the nearest modern equivalent to this movie would be Boiler Room, which is a very meritous movie in its own right - Affleck's character was clearly inspired by Baldwin's, and he does a good job. And yes, Mamet is on his own plane. Interesting anecdote about Mamet and another ingenious writer/director: when Paul Thomas Anderson was in film school, he substituted a few pages from a Mamet play as his submission for an assignment in a screenwriting/playwriting class. He received a c+. He promptly dropped out and has been saying "Fuck you!" to conventional filmmaking ever since. |
