most religions have ways of dealing with evil spirits. not just judeo/christian. if you believe in ghosts then you must believe in a higher power or a religion. (i believe in neither).
also as i pointed out earlier, that arm eating was hilarious, they didnt even attempt to stop that girl from eating her arm. hello doggie cone or put a blanket on her arms

Following scenario:

Tomorrow through a freak accident physicists at CERN discover and prove unequivocally that the slight unexplainable loss in body mass upon death is the result of a remarkably rare but theoretically possible quantum event as a mitochondrial specific protein degrades resulting in release of a lingering radiation burst which retains the general form of the deceased organism. This residual energy becomes periodically observable in the visible spectrum, interferes with electrical circuits and interacts with air molecules enough to occasional cause a pressure change resulting in movement of objects.

That could happen in a movie world and the next day the bulk of the worlds population would believe in the phenomenon of ghosts without any religious or higher power influence.

Mika discovered that attempting to exorcise the demon would just piss it off more. The last haunting victim ate off her own arm because (someone) decided bringing in priests was a good idea.

You can tell by the heavy foot steps that it was a large demon with an invisible form. During the Ouija scene one can also deduce that this form had large wings since the plants in that room kept swaying in the wind created by the demon. Also in the same scene with the Ouija board there is a controlled use of demonic flames.

All of these physical factors combined with the possession leads to an obvious conclusion. This demon was a Nathrezim, a Dread Lord. So unless it was Diathorus the Seeker it wouldn't have mattered how these people acted since most other Nathrezim can crush entire armies. Once they've got aggro, indoors where mounts don't work, a couple of humans in their thirties with cloth armor would get killed no matter what.

Only if he was one of the lower demons from Ashenvale. Otherwise he's got 20 levels or more above their spell hit ratings.

I think people are missing the demon's motive. It was either obsessed or possessive of her. It wanted to be with her, have her, whatever. I don't think it even wanted to kill her.

This explains the picture in the attic, smashing the BF's face in the picture, and saying while possessed that WE'LL finally be alright. The demon wanted her for whatever reason. Why else why it follow her to the ends of the earth. He was watching her, breathing on her, dragging her away, and constantly isolating her. Regardless if it was burning her family house down or killing her boyfriend it was always about her.

Maybe i'm off but to me that brought the movie together a bit more. I do think the demon had a dual purpose with the guy. He was irritated at him and wanted to lure him around but at the same time wanted him out of the picture. I'm hoping the sequel will have more to do with Kate and her connection with the demon and not a unique activity.

OK, I checked out [REC] with my 7 year old daughter, in retrospect I should not have done that, but I didn't know what we were getting into. Now we are both up, nervous energy as she talks about the thing in the attic near the end of the movie. We were chilling on the bed in the bedroom with the lights off, between things jumping out and her grabbing my neck at the same time, lol, we both enjoyed it. I think I'm more creeped out than she is. She just told me, "Don't worry dad, it's just fake." Time for some Family Guy on Hulu to clear my mind.
