Movie recommendations for private showings?

So, basically I picked up a Samsung 52B750 and I have a custom home theater system as well in a really big room with seating for about 10. I started doing what I dub "Movie night" which is really just inviting a bunch of friends over with some beers and food (10 or so) and we watch two films

I consider myself somewhat of a film buff and I like to introduce people to things they haven't seen before, or just cool thought provoking stuff. I'm also pretty big into foreign films.

I'm looking for some recommendations for what to show. Basically at this point what I have in mind is:

The Wrestler
Martyrs (French horror - showed this first night went over very well)
Let the right one in (Swedish? vampire story)
Rec (Spanish horror remade into "Quarantine" here in the states)
Boy A (British drama)

But i'm looking for more recommendations. The big thing is it can't be things that everyone has seen. Everyone can spit out things like Clockwork Orange or Spielberg movie_01 - but people don't want to sit for 4 hours to re-watch stuff. This is why I trend towards foreign films. I also showed Iron Man to display how nice everything looks and sounds, so hardcore action films are a positive as well, but most people have seen them.

Scary is always great. Nothing is really scary anymore though.

When we used to do movie night we always watched Rambo 2.

For movie night I would maybe look at movies that are out for download but still at the theater like Angels and Demons is out for DL along with Knowing.bg

The Nines is an interesting movie with Ryan Reynolds, I dont know if your friends would understand it though.

For some reason Barton Fink came to mind, kind of an odd movie though but love watching it from time to time and not everyone's seen it.

Total Recall should be a good movie night, Aviator would probably go over well too.

Maybe some shorter mini series like Generation Kill? You could split it into 2 viewings (total run time ~7hrs)

Well, if Martyrs went over well, you should definitely get Inside too. Frontière(s) is another good choice as well. Irréversible, Brotherhood of the Wolf, and The Crimson Rivers are other favorites of mine as French cinema goes. High Tension gets a cautious recommendation too; some people think the ending ruins it, but the rest of the movie is so good that I like it anyway. Ils was pretty good too; at the very least it was vastly superior to its Hollywood remake (The Strangers).

France isn't the only place with great horror these days. There's a UK flick called Eden Lake that was quite good too.

You won't be able to find all of those on Blu-ray, unfortunately. Some are available but only in Region B still. Region locking is faggotry of the highest order imo, but there's not much you can do about it yet (compared to how easy it was to region-unlock most DVD players). And whatever you do, don't rent movies like Inside, Martyrs, and probably a couple others that I listed from Blockbuster. They censor the hell out of NC-17/Unrated horror movies.

Koyaanisqatsi (1982)

With prescription drugs.

Also, another vote for Run, Lola, Run.

Le Ballon rouge(the red balloon)(French)

The General(Silent film)

Rear Window(Hitchcock)

Wait Until Dark(Audrey Hepburn)

Manhattan (Woody Allen)

(these are all old movies)

Lola rennt is definitely a classic. If you like Franka Potente, she was also in a pretty good German horror movie called Anatomie before they discovered her for The Bourne Identity. Avoid the sequel like the plague though.

Dancer in the Dark - Will make manly men cry
Akira Kurosawa's Dreams - Crazy awesome
The newest Zatoichi was alright
Ong Bak

Old classics should be a goldmine too, but it depends on how well versed everyone is.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
North by Northwest
Blue Velvet - probably the most quoted movie in my circle of friends
The Graduate
The Maltese Falcon
The Long Goodbye
Amazon Women on The Moon
And if you want to be really snobby Wild Stawberries

Then you've got indy films

The Good Thief - Nick Nolte + art thievery...I'm in heaven
Bubba Ho-Tep
Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story - based on my 2nd favorite novel
Art School Confidential

edit: I'd also highly recommend Rifftrax for both shorts and features. My favorites:

Transformers
Star Wars Holiday Special
Next
The Happening
Troll 2

I'm a big fan of Paul Thomas Anderson (Magnolia, Boogie Nights, Punch Drunk Love, Edit: and his latest, There Will Be Blood... <3) and most haven't seen his first film, Hard Eight (goes by Sydney in some places).
